Hacking? To all of the ladies I've missed dearly, I'm so sorry for the long absence- I've been having severe issues with my legs, and even being on this chair will make it worse. It's been off and on since June. More on since October. Chewie has allergies, and she woke up this (late morning, not the first time) doing something bizarre. I don't want to freak myself out or anything, so I haven't looked any information up, but it amounts to her making this hacking noise. It's like a dry cough/dry heaving. It happens at random times. She was playing and it happened, but it didn't happen when she was playing before. It's new behavior. Her voice is ALSO off, too. Almost like she's losing her voice. She was fine this morning, and fine yesterday. I have her appointment tomorrow, and I'm hoping someone has information. |

When you said a dry cough, the first thing I thought of was kennel cough. Also, canine influenza (dog flu) is going around. Has Chewie been around other dogs where she could pick up a contagious disease? After you see the vet, please update us and let us know what it turns out to be. |
pstinard Yes, she goes every sunday for a little play date. She seems to be uncomfortable. If she gets any worse she'll go to the secondary vet. I'll look at the treatment options and hopefully something will help her. Thank you for your fast reply. |
If she last played with other dogs on Sunday, then it *could* be kennel cough, which is highly contagious and takes 3 to 10 days to develop: Kennel Cough: Signs and Symptoms If it gets worse and it looks like she's having trouble breathing, I'd take her to the emergency vet to be on the safe side. But if it's just mild, occasional coughing, she should be okay until you see the vet tomorrow. Wishing the best for Chewie! |
I do have a question about Kennel cough. I've heard- and haven't asked yet- that just because a dog is vaccinated against this doesn't mean that they won't pick it up. How true is this information? |

Cough I just spent 100 bucks at the vet because Daisy had that same hacking cough. He checked for collapsed trachea, no. He really didn't know what is was and of course she never hacked in the vets office. He did give me medicine called torbugesic. It's a cough suppressant. One dose of that and she was asleep. The cough is gone. They only go for a walk up the street. No dog parks. No groomer. I have a home groomer. Maybe she scratched her throat on a dry piece of life's abundance kibble. It's round and rough edges. I do hope your dog's cough gets better.oh vet said only give wet food while the cough goes on. |
Sorry to here you haven't been feeling well. We just had a member that lives in Az. she wrote it is now mandatory to vaccinate against canine influenza. That would be the first thing I would ask about, especially since the baby goes on play dates. Please keep us updated. |

Emma has been vaccinated for it but she did pick it up during one time while i had her boarded . Went to the vet and she was on antibiotics for a lil bit and she was fine . |
We went to the vet any way this evening, I just didn't like how she wasn't exactly getting comfy. Any way, she's being tested for Valley Fever and being treated for Kennel Cough. Lungs weren't as clear as they'd like to see, some spots on them- showed me, but honestly I don't speak x-ray. She was tested for that and something that was long over due. I'll know by tomorrow. |
Most of the boarding establishments are insisting on the four vaccination. Is it the state that is requiring it I’m AR? It has been eryncold here this winter and the he@t seems to run all the time. CLimw@s doing a little bit of hacking so I started running the humidifier beside the bed where she sleeps and the hacking stopped. |

It is still not a legally required vaccine, but groomers and boarding facilities can require the vaccine for dogs staying at their facilities. From the article: Quote:

The vet called a few hours ago; Valley Fever wouldn't have been back today- it takes a few days to come back. Any way, I'm trying to stay positive and not freak out, but her bloodwork was unremarkable which puts something unlikely that we tested for (addisons) but, that we could do the full test. Because it was fine, they checked and the radiologist said she has a potential thinning of her (gosh insert something around the esophagus) but that they weren't positive. The vet thinks it's benign membrane irritation, and that it's unlikely she has collapsed trachea in the beginning stages. I'm going to focus on the fact that she had a definite cough and that the radio was doing their job thoroughly, and take the vet's expert opinion. She's on a med already that will treat this IF it comes up, and I have to continue to tell myself this. This has been something that has freaked me out since day one that can happen with our little guys, so I can't go down that rabbit hole UNLESS it comes to pass. I will update you with chews valley fever results. |
