Need reassurance
 
My 10-year old yorkie started vomiting and doing this odd whole-body jerking thing last night. It scared us enough that my husband and I took him to the emergency vet. The vet said that it looked like he had a tender abdomen and that we could do x-rays, but she didn’t think it was really necessary and he probably just had an upset stomach. She gave him some medication for nausea, told us to keep an eye on him for 24 hours, and sent us home. Obviously, we can’t take him to his vet today because it’s a holiday. I would like to take him back to his actual vet tomorrow but until then I’m just worried. He still seems a bit lethargic, however, he isn’t jerking or throwing up anymore. Has this happened to anyone else? The throwing up I could assume is maybe just a tummy bug, but the jerking was really scaring us.

I haven't had experience with the symptoms, but it does sound scary. The best I can offer is to take into consideration the opinions of the emergency vet staff.

If he seems to be in less distress, I would watch him carefully and check with his regular vet tomorrow. HOWEVER, you know your baby better than anyone and if you really feel that there is something desperately wrong, there is a good chance that you are right.

He’s sleeping peacefully right now. He seems okay, just really tired. I know I should trust the vet, I am just a worrier. He’s just a little guy, and as he gets older I tend to get more protective of him.

I am in the same boat. My Lollipop is seven and I, too, worry about her more than I worry about Lacie who is four. My regular vet practice is available 24/7/365 so there is a certain level of security if something goes amiss.

I would think that blood work might have been something to do. If he seems ok today and isn't vomiting, that is probably a good sign; but, of course if that changes, you need to get him back to the ER.
Hard to tell what the jerking was....if he does it again, try to video it.
I would definitely take him to his vet in am no matter what just to get him looked at....if you have not had blood work done on him in some time, you might ask your vet if it would be helpful. I get my pups bloodwork done at a minimum of once/year. As they age, usually every six months. That is where you usually see changes before they become major issues

He actually just had his yearly blood work done about a month ago, and all was fine. We may have figured out the problem though. We were at my brother-in-law’s house last night, and he gave their two dogs their monthly doses of Trifexus. Apparently he just puts them into the dogs’ bowls and didn’t watch them to make sure they ate them. We think Louie got into one of the bowls and took a dose of the Trifexus. The only other time he’s tried oral flea/tick/heart worm prevention, he got violently ill from it. So, we think that may have caused it. We aren’t positive, though, so I’m going to run the situation by his vet tomorrow because he’s due for his Heartguard and Frontline doses today. I don’t know if he should have those if it’s possible he had the Trifexus. Thanks for the advice! I love that when I’m worried I can come on here and release some of it to people who understand.

Oh my yeah Trifexus is so toxic. Hopefully he will be ok. Poor pup.

Well, that would be a relief I guess if it was that. Let us know what your vet thinks!

Sorry about not updating yesterday after I talked to the vet, we had a little crisis that ended with my husband driving 3 hours to hang out with his mom in the hospital because she has pneumonia. Yeah, our 2018 is starting with a bang.

The vet says that even if Louie did get the other dogs’ flea/tick stuff, as long as he’s feeling better by this weekend we should be fine to give him his Heartgard and Frontline. Louie is feeling back to his happy little self, so no lasting harm done! I am still annoyed with my brother-in-law because he’s so lax about his own dogs’ health (how do you not at least watch to make sure they take their medicine?), but being annoyed with my brother-in-law is pretty common for me. Thanks for the advice and commiseration, fellow dog parents!

Thank you for the update! So glad to hear that Louie is back to his normal happy little self.

Sorry to hear of your dear MIL's bout with pneumonia. Hope she has recovered and your life calms down a bit.
