I finally got a second opinion on my little Kinder for incontinence. My vet had her on estradiol 1mg.which she took half a tablet once a week. Lady Jane wrote on my post about the dangers so I listened and went to another vet. Today she was given Proin 25 mg. Chewable tablets. The vet said to give 1/4 a tablet twice a day for my 6.1 pound yorkie. If she does well I can cut her back to once a day. Sometimes he said you may cut her back every other day so I was wondering if this is safe dosage. I hope she does not get a seizure from reading the side effects. She is 7 1/2 years old now and on prescription diet for calcium oxalate crystals which she is doing great on the new diet. Hopefully someone can answer my question. Susan | You can check out the Proin dosage guidelines on their webpage: http://prnpharmacal.com/wp-content/u...Proin-FOI2.pdf . They recommend .91 mg/pound twice a day, so what you are giving Kinder is about right. According to the side effects list, seizures are very rare. There are other, more common, side effects, all of which can be easily monitored. The most common are hypertension (high blood pressure), emesis (vomiting), weight loss, proteinuria (protein in the urine), anxiety, and lethargy (tiredness). I would definitely have the vet monitor the blood pressure from time to time, and maybe have a urinalysis done as well. The other common symptoms you should be able to see yourself and tell the vet about. |
