Help my puppy is still struggling after choking.... My 4 month old yorkie just swallowed a large piece of rawhide from a small dog rawhide chew. He coughed and weezed, but seemed to be ok after a few minutes. He was able to drink water, but is acting a little strange and is weezing while playing with my husband. HE also seems like he's trying to cough the piece back up.....Does anyone know a good site for choking...or any advice about my puppy? Help please - I'm very nervous!!!!! :( |
choking There are many things that we can fix ourselves, BUT choking is not one of them..he needs the ER vet. Best wishes... |

I agree please get that puppy to the vets or ER. if the peice is lodged it could turn and shut off any air from getting thru. Please get him there soon. |
I also agree, Let us know how he is doing. And a word of late advice, Raw hide isn't a good chew item for small dogs.. ;) |
He seems to be totally fine now. Maybe new parent syndrome!! He is now eating and drinking. Thank you for the quick advice everyone.......we really appreciate it!! |
This is the 2nd one tonight! Is there a "full moon" out tonight? |
Sometimes drinking water helps whatever might be half way down to go the rest of the way down..... I've done this with my dogs a couple of times. Every once in a while they seem to get something stuck in their throat -- not really choking - but something that is just bothering them (like a piece of grass or something). I encourage them to drink water - and this has usually solved the problem. Again - my dogs weren't actually choking - this is a totally different and more serious problem. Carol Jean |
It is best not to let yorkies have rawhide as it is not 100% digestible. They can cause blockages. Try bully sticks instead. Hope your baby is okay now. |

I agree!! With my first post "New to Site with Shaking Baby" can tell you what we went through and we are pretty sure it was caused by blockage from Dingo (rawhide) bones. The vet was't 100% what caused all of our troubles...... Not to scare you, but it still needs to be watched...just because it finally went down, doesn't mean it will come out. Most blockage will cause no poo and vomiting. They will not eat or drink much either...all of these are what happened in my case...each case will be different, I am sure. I would probably even call the vet and double check....it wouldn't hurt! I am very strict on what treats I give now....that was a very hard lesson to learn from! Please, no rawhides or greenies.....I cut (as someone advised) a greenie into a little piece (like what can be biten off and swallowed) and that thing tripled in size! Imagine that in our little ones?! Good luck and I hope all is well! Please keep us posted if there are in changes! |

Even though your baby appears to be ok, please monitor him carefully for the next few days and make sure he is pooping. Chunks of rawhide can cause blockages with disasterous results. |
Thank you everyone for great advice! Thank you everyone for all of the great and FAST advice. I stayed up most of the night to keep an eye on Otis.....I guess I'm a nervous mommy! Anyway, Otis has a little case of the runs today, but was able to eat and drink the same amount he usually does. He played, went for walks and is acting like his old little self :) I'm planning to move his regular vet appointment from Wed. to an earlier day this week just to make sure. Has anyone experienced their dogs having diahria after choking/almost choking? Just wanted to know if this could be a symptom of the same problem.... Thank you everyone again for all your help! Otis seems to be doing great!!! |
My dog Vivi had a blockage from rawhide..she was throwing up and had runny poops. I took her to the vet and they put an IV in her arm. They also did something to help her pass the blockage. She was really sick for a couple of days and definately needed the attention of the vet. I don't think you are just being a first time parent....trust your instincts.. I think you should at the very least call your vet. |
So happy that Otis is feeling and acting normal. I had a similar experience with my Yorkie, Biscuit, several years ago. He was chewing away on a tiny rawhide bone, when he started gagging. My husband and I scooped him up and raced to the ER. Just as we got to the parking lot, Biscuit barfed up the rawhide along with a gallon of muucus (sp). We had him checked anyway, and the vet said that they see so many cases of dogs, all sizes, choking on rawhide. As the dogs chew it, it gets slimmy and sometimes when they swallow it, it gets stuck. Needless to say, rawhide has never been given to our furbabies again, and they don't miss it. Let us know what the vet saids on your visit. :p |
