Depressed Dog? My older sister's dog was here for about 4 days. As soon as they left, I could tell that my dog was real sad. She has been moping around from ever since. She started to have many accidents. She sleeps a lot and doesn't play as much as she used to. We try our best to get her play. She plays for a few minutes then stops and gives a sad look. She used to constantly want to play. I was thinking about getting another dog, but my sister does not think that is a good idea since Rosie is so sad right now. My sister says that if she's this sad right now then she could get real sick if something happens to my other dog. I'm afraid to get another one. Is there anything else that I can do to make her happy again? |
I don't know. I think it might be better for you to get another dog. Whenever we went away for more than a day, Macey became really depressed because she missed her kitty at home. She would act the same way that you described, and was so excited to see her kitty again when we got home! |
The thing that makes me confused is that she has accidents in places that I would least expect her to. She had an accident by her water bowl and her play area. Don't dogs usually like to keep their play area and near their food clean? She went from not having a single accident all last weekend to having 5-6 since last night. |
Maybe her problem isn't emotional.. Maybe she could be physically sick. Have her eating, drinking habits changed? How is her stool? You might want to just run her into your vet for a look over to make sure there's not some underlying problem. I hope your poor girl gets her pep back into her step really soon! Keep us updated. |
She just got her vaccine on Thursday. She has diarrea but that happened the last time she had her vaccines. I noticed her behavior changed from Monday when my older sister's dog left, but my younger sister said she would play while I was at work, so I didn't mentioned it to the doctor. I think my sister was counting the 5 minutes she plays and stops. She used to play for hours. I noticed today when I was home all day that she doesn't play for hours anymore. |

3 months. I forgot to mention that I have noticed her drinking a lot more than she used to. |
Is she sensitive on the area where she recieved her vaccine? If so, maybe that's why she doesn't want to romp around for very long like usual |
She's not. The last time she was fine by Friday. For the past hour she keeps barking at me like she wants to play so I go play, but she only plays for a little. She normally doesn't bark a lot. I feel like she's trying to tell me something. I don't know what to do. |

I will definetly call the vet on Monday. I just couldn't wait until then. My friends do not have small dogs. I took her to her first class at Pet Smart today and she seemed really scared. She loved Pet Smart the last time I took her. I was going to try to take her again tomorrow to see if anything is different. Thanks for all your help. |
I had to put a dog to sleep last fall - and my Bichon missed her a lot. He wasn't playful and moped around a lot. About two months after I lost my dog, I got my little Yorkie. At first, my Bichon (a shy dog) stayed away from the little pup. But that was an impossible feat - since the puppy wouldn't leave him alone for a second. And, within two weeks, they became fast friends. My Bichon's whole personality has changed. He is more playful, more affectionate, eats better -- and all is well again! I'm sure I could have gotten the new puppy sooner and it would have worked out just as well. I see no reason to wait - if you do want another dog. If your dog doesn't take to the new pup immediately - give them a few weeks - they will become great friends! Carol Jean |
I just wanted to update everything. Rosie was herself again on Monday. I guess she got used to the other dog not being around. She is soooooo...playful now and is better around other dogs again. Thanks for all your replies. |
