Concern about lumps around mammary 1 Attachment(s) Hello, The love of my life, Baby, is a 9 year old female Yorkie. She has not been spayed yet, which I am planning to take her in for anyway next week. However, I started to notice lumps around her mammary area. Around 3 weeks ago, I went to my vet about a small lump inside her stomach. He said it was most likely a hernia that he can take of during her spay. I then had to go on a two week trip but when I returned, I noticed that these lumps. There seems to be a hard pea sized lump inside her mammary. While not visible, I can definitely feel it -- right above her vulva. Her behaviors haven't changed and I haven't noticed anything to say that she's feeling unwell. I am taking her to the vet today because I can't wait any longer. I am praying its not cancer or anything serious. I just wanted to know if anyone else has seen this happen? Thank you. |

Lumps Sorry to hear that your baby has these lumps, but pray that they are benign and can be removed and/or treated during the spay. Hope all is well and please let us know how she is and what the lumps were. I can imagine you are very concerned about her and pray all is well by now. |
Thank you for the well wishes. My vet recommended a blood work and that came out “excellent” according to my vet. He told me to get her spayed first, which she is scheduled for next week, and to watch the lumps and if it doesn’t get any bigger, it won’t be something to worry about. Should I push my vet for a biopsy during her spay? Our vet did say I could opt for a lumpectomy or mastectomy but that I might be rushing into something that may not be needed. My question is: is a good blood test result enough to assuage my fears? Thank you. |
Update Hello, Thank you for the well wishes. I took my baby in to the vet on Friday (11/17/17) and my vet did seem concerned. He advised me to get a blood test done. CBC, Chemistry, and T4 was done. My dog's results came back "excellent" according to my vet so he said I shouldn't be concerned for now. He advised to my go forward with the spay and keep an eye out for the lumps and that if it doesn't grow any bigger then my baby should be fine. My baby is scheduled for her spay next week and I talked to my vet about a lumpectomy but he thinks I'm being too forward. I'm thinking of getting a second opinion just because I'm not too comfortable with the wait and see approach. Any advise on how I should proceed? Thank you! |
I would definitely get a 2nd opinion on those lumps, and spay is a must. |
Lumps Perhaps a second opinion is in order? And certainly go ahead with the spay. But if you trust your vet and want him to go ahead and treat your baby, I would suggest at least a biopsy of the lumps or the even remove them if that is a relatively easy thing to do. I say this as my neighbor had a girl dog who had mammary lumps and the vet said they were cancerous but not aggressive, so he removed them and is going to monitor the dog in the future. The dog is doing so well now. This dog was rescued some time ago and had had a couple of litters. It was spayed before adoption. Good luck, whatever you decide to do, and please update on your baby. |

Hello, Thank you very much for all your suggestions. I did go ahead and got a second opinion from a well-known veterinarian in my area. He suggested a single mastectomy for the 2 areas we're concerned about. Then do a biopsy. My baby did get spayed last Friday (11/24) so she's recovering from that. She's healing very well. Her mastectomy is scheduled for January but I'm going to consult with our vet and see if we can do it in late December. I'm so nervous because I don't know what those lumps are from and I don't want to wait any longer than I have to. I will let you all know of Baby's progress. Thank you for all your well wishes. My baby went in for her mastectomy on the 2 lower right mammary areas. The top one came out benign while the bottom came out to be adenocarcinoma with a mitotic count of 2. My vet believes we got the entire lump out but the margins are pretty narrow (1.99mm deep and 2.64mm laterally) with no vascular invasion. I'm just worried since the margins are so narrow. The lump itself was no less than 2 cm. Do you think I should consider another surgery to get wider margins? I just don't want to put my baby through so much... Aside from that, she's recovering well from her surgery and is ever the joy in my heart. Please does anyone have experience with this? I'm hopeful but devastated. |
Personally, I would get another vet. I am just seeing this and don't understand a vet saying that blood work is good and not to worry about mammary tumors. As to your latest question....I would go to another vet for a consult and if surgery was suggested I would go for it. NO way would I wait and see. |

The doctor is not recommending additional surgery at this time since the margins were clean (even though they were narrow) and the mitotic index was very low (2). We are taking an X-ray on Friday to be absolutely safe. |
