Honking Yorkie Our 12-year-old female Yorkie has been honking (coughing) for quite a while. We know this is caused from a damaged trachea. Outside of surgery, does anyone have any remedies (homemade, over-the-counter, or prescribed) that can help our little girl? |
There are so many meds that can be used for CT. Which ones has your vet prescribed? You probably already know, but it is good to keep the environment as stress free as possible. Only very mild exercise and keeping her weight down are two other important things. |
I would go with what your Vet has prescribed, especially at this vulnerable age. |
I would not get Collapsing Trachea surgery. My moms Yorkie had it pretty bad and they had him on hydrocodone twice a day and it worked great. |
Did the medicine help with the coughing? Several times a day Scooter will begin coughing and end with a painful sounding gagging sound. At night he wakes me up making weird sounds that must come from not getting enough to breathe. |
MY 13 yo yorkie takes theophylline 37.5 mg twice a day and tramadol 25mg twice a day. I crush it and use honey on a spoon |
Thanks. I'll ask my vet about it. Some nights I don't get much sleep because Scooter is making all those weird noises when he's sleeping. The honking when he's away makes me feel so badly for him. It sounds very painful. |
Your vet should do an xray, it may be bronchial collapse as is with my yorkie. The meds dont solve the problem, just make it more livable, He has been on them for 4 years and is now 13. most nights he can sleep all night sometimes he is up having trouble breathing. good luck |

My vet has all the equipment so I'll make an appointment and see what he says. He recently did an ultrasound surgery looking for a tiny tumor on my friend's dog so I know they probably have specialty equipment. I worry so much about Scooter. He used to love to play fetch but he can't do it anymore because the excitement brings on choking. |
