High Bile acids and vomiting
 
Hi Everyone, I could really use your advice and opinions. My 2.5 year old Minnie has been vomiting, increase drinking and urination. I took her to the vet and her Bile acids scored at 100! The vet gave us a supplement and told us to give her pepcid too. The past two nights she has been vomiting large amount in the middle of the night. I called the vet and they offered to see her tomorrow for an xray but they do not seem too concerned with her liver disease. Any recommendations or anyone going through something similar. I want to make sure she lives a long life

I would be out the door of that vet's office if they were not concerned with elevated BATs!!! Further testing IS in order, but I would seek out the opinion of a specialist at this point if your vet is not concerned.

As for the vomiting, if it is severe, she could end up dehydrated before tomorrow. Is she eating today and keeping it down? You can check her hydration status by lifting her lip and making sure her gums are wet to touch. If they are sticky and dry, she needs to see a vet today!!

Thank You! The doctor came in today for an emergency appointment. We have a medication to give to her and then I bring her in for a full bile acid panel this week. Based on those results they are recommending us to go to the university of cornell.

I should add that there is a vet at Cornell who has done studies in liver shunts/ liver disease. Her name is Sharon Center.

Oh my...I was just looking at your previous thread about her neuro symptoms. Two members mentioned liver testing.

I am linking this here just for others to see because this might help someone in the future. I cannot tell you how many times I have met people who spent a small fortune for neuro testing on their yorkie only to end up having to do liver shunt tests and then finding out there was a shunt! I really wish vets would rule out liver shunts first...it would save the poor dogs from suffering and the owners a ton of agony and money.

Of course we don't know for sure, but if her bile acids are as high as you said, I think it will no doubt be liver disease.

Thank You! Yes, we finally have an answer for her seizures, staring into space, and vomiting liver disease! I'm glad we didn't spend the $3,000 right away for the MRI. I am thinking positive thoughts that her results are Friday won't be severe and if it has to be something that it just be a MVD and that a change of food and supplements will help.

I don't know.....I think if it were me, I might rather be dealing with a liver shunt as it can be repaired. With her symptoms, my guess is that it is likely a shunt. Of course, even if it is, they do still have some mild MVD after....but I have one and he is just fine. He was diagnosed at a much older age. Here is his thread if you might find it helpful:
