6 year old Yorkie in Kindney Failure
 

Hi all,

I have a 6-year-old Yorkie who was recently diagnosed with kidney failure. She has been healthy her whole life until this past week or two. Where we noticed some weight loss and progressing lethargy. Over the weekend she stopped eating completely so off to the vet we went and were shocked to discovered such bad test results. :-( She is currently hospitalized on iv fluids.

I have been searching the internet for anything that could help and wanted to reach out here to see if any of you are or were in the same boat. What worked for you what didn't? What should I look for? Dietary and supplement recommendations etc. I have found various products on the internet with some great claims but am not sure what to believe or not. I do not want to get sucked into some scam offering false hope.

This has come out of nowhere and she is so young. :-(

Is it possible she got into something toxic to dogs like grapes?

Moose takes Epakitin (phospours binder) with every meal and Azydol (probiotic) twice a day.

We tried switching his food to a Renal/kidney RX diet. He would not eat it at all. He went from 19 plus lbs down to 14 lbs. He is now back to 15.5. He
is eating "primal raw" diet. His labs are much much better and stable!! Plus he is back to his ol self!

Kidney disease is a roller coaster ride. Good and bad days. If you are on Facebook, there are several really good informative canine kidney disease support groups. You should check them out.

Thank you for your response. I checked out your post. I am curious what Moose's Lab results were? I see the thumbnail, but can not get it to open.

Molly's BUN is 131, Creatine is 4.3, Phosphorus is 15.9 but her albumin is only 1.8. Vet said she is in a very precarious situation.

She has been in the hospital on intensive IV fluids for almost 36 hours with NO CHANGE in her blood levels. :-(

I am not sure what to do. Doesn't seem right or fair to keep up with the intensive treatments and such if it is not working. Plus she gets so depressed when she is away from us. Maybe we should bring her home for supportive care. ??? I just don't know.

Please let me know what Moose's levels were... I am looking for a shred of hope here.

I am so sorry Molly is so ill. Renal failure is weird...they can sometimes turn around and do well for a time...then, other times they fail quickly.

One of my pups currently is in renal failure. Rookie is his name. He has been ill for about three years now but has been hanging in. He has been diagnosed with PLN and PLE ... I had him at the vet yesterday for blood work and his BUN 73, Creat 3.9 .. phosporous is creeping up but I forget the number. His albumin is normal but last Sept it was not. His potassium is high so they are decreasing his Enalapril. He had an ACTH stim test last year to rule out Addisons as a cause for the increased K+. He is on kidney diet .. right now K/D...he was on NF. I give him whatever he wants to eat, but do try to keep him on the RX foods.

He is on aluminum hydroxide as a phosphorous binder.

The only thing you might want to ask your vet about is the possibility of leptospirosis. When my Olivia was diagnosed years ago (2012) with PLN, she was tested for lepto. I will put her link below.... She just passed away recently so they DO sometimes turn around!

OH Kim..... I am sorry to hear this about Molly. :cry::cry:
It is so hard on us to try and figure out what is best for our babies.
I continue to keep you and Molly in my thoughts and prayers.

Hey all,

I just wanted to update you. Molly lost her battle with Kidney Failure. Whatever happened was quick. She stopped producing urine and became so toxic... even on intensive iv fluids.

We are all just so devastated.

So sorry Kim! RIP Miss Molly!

I would wait to hear what the vet says. She may be ok with fluids and Rx.
