Collapsed Trachea Good Medicine? It is well known that our little bundles of joy and admiration have a genetic disorder and even the best might be prone to a collapsed Trachea. I am seeking advise. My buddy is approaching 12 years old and does not feel good anymore. He is on cough medicine but needs something more. I would like his life to be the best in his final years. I see a lot of medicines out there for Yorkies with collapsed trachea but all are costing approximately ~ $50. I am hoping we can establish a repository of concerned owners that have tried one of these medicines and it has worked. Please advise. A big Thanks ahead of time for all your knowledgeable minds. |
collapsed trachea Hello, My 13.5 year old male, during hot, humid conditions mainly in the summer, has had coughing spells which are really quite frightening. He was x-rayed and found his trachea did want to collapse. However, now that it's cooler and less humid, he has stopped coughing. Just prior to his stopping, I researched a product that had excellent reviews. It's a s liquid product, which you syringe into the dogs mouth or add a few drops to honey which the dog can then lick it up. It was created by vets totally. All natural oils for soothing the throat. It's called "Throat Gold" and sells for 40 bucks a eye dropper bottle full. However, as he has stopped, i have yet to try it on him. I thought I'd tell you about the product as one that the vet approved of, from the ingredients alone. Look it up; read the reviews and try it. I'm sure it will cease his coughing. You might want to try Lomotil. It is an interesting approach to CT. I have seen it help some and not others..but it is definitely inexpensive. If your vet has not heard of using it tell him/her it is in Kirk's Vet Manual (not sure which edition, though) Here is a link to a copy of it... Index of /lomotil |
Hydromet cough syrup. It’s prescription, but amazing. Georgie, my 11 yr old Yorkie’s tracheal collapse is end stage — the x-rays show his trachea ending in a point like a pencil, at times. : ( Very low dose Prednisilone .5/.6)(it’s prednisone already partly broken down to go easier on my Yorkie’s enlarged liver) every other day; plus theophylline (a bronchodilator) 2X a day; and the syrup when necessary has given my dog great quality of life and almost no coughing spells, except in winter, as all of this has somehow made him prone to a light version of bronchitis. Good luck with your baby. The coughing is so hard to witness because one feels so helpless and it sounds so terrible, especially when it ends in a gag. : ( |
