Not Pooping - Any suggestions? Hi.. My pup CoCo (10 weeks) has not pooped in about 40 hours, after she had diharrea. Does anyone have any suggestions?.. We are kind of worried, and have just given her 1.5 cc of mineral oil... Anyone tried this? Thanks- H :aimeeyork |
Loki used to get diarrhea all the time and once it would clear up he wouldn't poop for a while, about a day. So, I'd say it's not so unusual. 10 weeks is little so I'd call the vet before giving anything. Also, Loki always needs to go when he exercises, especially walks. Can you play some fetch or go for a walk around the yard? That might help. |
Erin gave you very good advice. A piece of raw carrot to eat has taken care of any constipation Joey has had (and he loves it!). |
Whenever Desi has a pooping problem I give her a little mineral oil to loosen her, but, she's never had diahrea. Maybe you should just give the Vet a quick call just in case. |
First, what did you use to control and stop the diarrhea? Sometimes we get excited and go overboard when what is needed is (as we nurses from the old school say) tincture of TIME. In other words, just remain calm, wait, and do not give anything else. I have never given mineral oil to a dog or puppy-my vet has never suggested it and we don't use it in hoomans much anymore. Usually, a wee bit of canned pumpkin (about a teaspoon for a pounder or more) will do it. But, if you gave anti-diarrheal meds they have to work their way out and the bowel has to fill up with stool again before a BM can happen. So, now that she has had something to stop and something to go, her GI tract might be a bit irritated. I agree a vet call is in order especially if the mineral oil causes diarrhea again.. With puppies, so many things cause diarrhea and sometimes it is parasites or germs. |
And also - how is your pup feeling? If she is back to her usually self (without going to the bathroom for a while) -- I would just waited and not give her anything. If she isn't uncomfortable - she is probably not having a problem. But, be sure and keep an eye on her for a while. I certainly do agree that "activity" helps dogs go to the bathroom. Sometimes a brisk walk or some outdoor exercise is all that is needed. Carol Jean |
