Broken Foot!
 

Capi jumped off my husband's sholder last night. He is about 6 feet tall! After a huge vet bill they realized she had broken all four bones in her foot. They described it as breaking the bridge of your foot. She will be in a splint for 4-6 weeks!! She looks so miserable, but she is doing well and keeping her spirit up! My husband felt so bad! Thank goodness Banfeild was still open so we didn't have take take her to the Emergency Vet. They were wonderful with her there!

We had a very similar experience with our puppy. We had just arrived home from being out for like 3 or 4 hours and as soon as we opened the front door she began yelping and barking. Gets very very excited to see us even if we leave her for only 5 minutes! On one particular day her daddy and I arrived home and he went over to pick her up and greet her, she got so excited that she started walking up on his chest and over his shoulders. It all happened so fast that he did not have time to catch her... so he leaned forward just a bit, but it was still very tall for her. She jumped off and fell. It hurt her and she felt it.... poor baby. All I could do through out this fleeting moment was to merely attempt to grab her but she was too fast to do anything. Once she fell off we picked her up and inspected her to see if she injured any organs or her legs. She was right out of our hands and off to running again!!! We were very lucky and this served as a learning experience for us in just holding her more carefully. Its understandable that your husband feel awful, but it really was not his fault. These little ones are so fast and energetic... we just have to learn to try to be just as quick as they are!!!

Oh- I am so sorry your baby got hurt. I know this is so scary. They are so quick and again as I have said in the past- THey think they are cats!!!!!!!!!! I wish her a speedy recovery with little pain.

Thank you guys for all your support! I know it wasn't his fault, but you should have seen him, he looked like he had been crying when I met him at the vet. When he called and said he was taking her in, I knew it had to be very bad because he is currently doing his residency in orthopedic surgery! He and the vet both looked at the x rays and talked about what to do...it was actually kind of fuuny! I told him to just get ready, because when we do start having children, these sorts of things are going to happen to them as well!:)

Okay...first let me say that I'm soooo sorry that you and your little one are going thru this. It isn't a nice thing to go thru. Trust me...I know! I've been there done that. My little Bailey...1 lb 8 to 9 oz chocolate boy was playing with a shih tzu and the shih tzu got to playing with him a little too rough when Bailey took off across the floor running with the shih tzu right behind him. Well...the shih tzu caught him about the time he got to the door and ran him into the door facing. The weight of the shih tzu and him against his little foot was enough to break all four of his toes. So off to the vet we go! A splint like the one you show is what we got and about 8 weeks later, it was healed enough to come off. We called him 99-thump while he had that thing on, cuz he sounded like that when he'd run across the floor with the splint on. :)

TIP! To keep the splint clean and dry until you go back to the vet...get some human infant socks from the store and slide one over top of the splint each day. Let her run around with those on in the house and even outside. That way, you won't have to take the splint off to change the wrapping! It works WONDERFULLY!

If you're going to give her a bath, wrap some saran wrap around the sock and put one of those puffy ponytail holders at the very tippy top of the splint and then roll the saran wrap over the top of the ponytail holder to keep the water from going down inside the splint. If it gets wet inside the splint, the splint has to come off and get changed, then the healing process gets slowed down. :( Just some things we learned while we had ours on. After 8 weeks of having our splint on, our splint looked about the same as it did when it went on...our vet was impressed! (it was a first for him to not have to change a splint because it didn't get wet or too dirty)

So sorry! Sabrina and Elvira send puppy kisses for the boo boo. Hope she does well with the cast. Not your fault, by the way. These little suckers are so fast.

alpayton: Thanks so much for the tips! We went to Target tonight and got some infant socks! Great idea! Much cuter too! But now I won't be so worried about her going outside or chewing it off!!! Thanks a bunch from Capi and I!

;) Glad we could help! Aren't the little socks sooo cute? Another tip you'll thank me for later...either hand wash those little socks in your sink or put them in a lingerie bag to wash them or you'll lose them in your washing machine or other clothes that are being washed at the same time! hehehe

You'll find it won't bother her as much as it'll bother you. I'd be willing to bet the splint will stay on a little longer than the 4-6 weeks that they told you, so be prepared for that time not to be right on the money.

Also, even 2 months later or so, Bailey still favors that foot every once in a while. He doesn't favor it all the time, just sometimes. The vet said that would be something that might last forever and not to be concerned about it, but I thought I would pass it on to you incase your vet didn't.
