Horrifying skin issue My little yorkie girl and I were out for a walk. A woman came down off her porch and greeted us, told us she has a yorkie too. She began to describe hair loss and I shared a lot of the info from the forum with her. She then went and got her little dog. It was horrifying. ALL of the skin from the front legs back to the tail was black and bald. The skin looked like an armadillo. The rest of the hair was wiry and the eyes looked unhealthy. They described their vet experience, obviously lacking, and what they had tried. I was speechless. Oh, my! She had petted my dog. I came right home and bathed my little girl in case anything had been petted on to her. It was the worst, most horrifying skin problem I had ever seen and now I'm hoping not to lose sleep over fear of contagiousness. I appreciate our vet, the YT forum, and our ability to get good care for our pup even more than before. |
Did you suggest your vet or maybe her coming here? |
All of the above. Her husband came out and also heard everything. |

They have seen a vet and been given some treatments. It was unclear what caused the initial problem, they referred tacitly to some trauma. But then also talked about antifungals, fish oil, sleeping meds, and other random things they have tried. I asked a few questions and tried to share what I knew but you could tell they had done more than they could afford and were trying anything they could think of. I was just upset, too, that the lady had petted by little girl before any conversation of this dog's condition and I have no idea of the cause or contagiousness. They will, I am sure, continue to try to figure out if there is more they can do. But I will not expose my dog anymore to the situation. |

Doesn't look like the alopecia. The skin was thick and black and hairless from the front legs all the way around the body to the tail. For lack of a better example, it looks like the skin version (dry and cracked) of the center body of an armadillo. Hypothyroidism? Possibly hypothyroidism? We see some of this at the shelter that I volunteer at. Hope the poor baby gets the helps he/she needs. Signs of hypothyroidism include hair loss, usually on your dog’s trunk, back of the rear legs, and tail. His coat will be dull and thin, his skin flaky, but not itchy or red (which is usually tied to fleas or an allergic reaction). He may also have black patches of skin. This is followed by weight gain, muscle loss, sluggishness, a slowed heart rate, toenail and ear infections, and intolerance to cold. It’s not widespread, but hypothyroidism is also linked to seizures, heart and blood vessel problems, and infertility. For a diagnosis, your vet will do a series of blood tests. |
