Please help! Neuro problems and starting a new medication Hi All, Minnie had two seizures two days ago and has not had once since. Her left legs will go out on her and she will extend them and start shaking. Minnie does shake daily. I took her to the neurologist for an exam. They want to start her on zonisamide, I have heard mix things about this medication and hope you can share your stories if you have a pup on this too. Another thing they mentioned since she does not have a menace reflux, goose stepping, patella issue, and abnormal gait they they there could be a brain abnormality. The vet suggested that we can go ahead and do a MRI and take spinal fluid for testing. I am nervous about doing this as she is 6 pounds and would have to put her under. Has anyone ever had to have their pup get a MRI? Anything advice and stories can help! |
Anesthesia is perfectly safe if you do pre surgery blood work. I would do it. |
Wait, how old is this pup and have you done bile acid testing or advanced blood work to see liver function? So, what is the real/actual purpose for doing the MRI? Is it to look for brain damage? If yes, I'm not sure what the value is of the MRI bc what can you do about brain damage anyway...? |

Thank you all. The vet recommended the MRI so we can get a diagnosis and to verify there isn't any inflammation around her brain. Not doing the MRI they want to treat her with medication We can do a drug trail or do a MRI for a diagnosis and treatment plan. |

Her abnormal gait, no menace reflux, and goose stepping they think is caused by a abnormality in her cerebellum, which they would not be able to treat. She is still full of energy and a happy little girl! |
How old is this pup ? AND did they check her liver ? |

I would not be concerned about the anesthesia and the MRI--those are both noninvasive procedures, and providing they do the bloodwork to make sure that Minnie doesn't have a bad reaction to the anesthesia, it should be safe. Collection of cerebrospinal fluid (spinal tap) involves sticking a needle into the spinal column to collect fluid. That would make me a little more nervous, but they say that it's a fairly safe procedure. Here's a link to a description of the procedure: http://bvns.net/wp-content/uploads/2...Spinal_Tap.pdf These tests (especially the MRI) are likely to be expensive, but if cost is not an issue, I would have it done. As others have mentioned, I'd be sure to have the blood work needed to rule out liver issues done first. |
