Swallowed rawhide A while ago my yorkie had a rawhide bone. It was the kind that looked kind of like a dumbell, with the knots at the end. He chewed the thing so much that eventually those ends came undone, and I removed those from him and let him chew the rest. I think eventually he ended up swallowing the rest, and so I never let him chew the other parts. Fast forward to today, he's about 4 months old, and I was cleaning off my desk and one of the parts of the end knots rolled off. He immediately grabbed it and started running around and chewing, so I figured I'd just let him have it for a bit and then take it away. He chewed it so much that the knot rolled out and wasn't a circle anymore. Well as I was just about to turn around to him to take it, I heard him gulp and he started sniffing around trying to find more. I was scared because I didn't know if it would harm him or not, but I remembered the time he swallowed parts of the bone when he was way younger and was fine. Should he be fine now? He's acting normal currently, he only swallowed it about 20 minutes ago. |

Just be careful if your baby is a small Yorkie. My late Jilly choked trying to swallow a tied end she'd chewed off, went crazy digging at her face, fighting for breath when it stuck in her pharynx, swelled, cut off her breathing. I had to breathe for her when she went quiet, limp in one arm while I drove to the vet after 10 pm with the other and will never know how either of us made it there alive! I was panicked! But thankfully we did both make it but I will NEVER allow another toy dog to have those chewies with a big tied end - they can chew it off and when trying to swallow, it can lodge in the throat! Vet said she was lucky to be alive. |
I don't give rawhide or pigs ears either since my vet told me not too. I do give alternative to rawhide called smart sticks peanut butter flavor and they love those. They make smart bones also but I really worry about those becoming a choking hazard when the balls on the ends break off. With any bone/stick I always try to supervise as close as possible since I do worry about choking. Just watch for not eating, vomiting or diarrhea which could mean a blockage or partial blockage. |
Rawhide swells when it gets wet so it could very well cause a blockage. Rawhide is also very bad for dogs because it's treated with formaldehyde. Also many many brand were just recalled. You need to keep an eye out and make sure he is still pooing. |

Thank you all. Koda is the piggest pain in the rear and swallows EVERYTHING. He got into some seashells once and had me so worried. He's gotten string, paper, toilet paper, a plastic candy wrapper, you name it. I'm mainly good at tearing it out of his mouth, but sometimes he gulps it down too quick before I can get it, or he will get into something while I'' not there and I can't get it away. He's only had a problem once, and that was when he swallowed the shells. Started throwing up bile and scared me. Got him to the vet the next day. Let's hope I don't have to go through that again. He's smart enough to know he's not supposed to have something too, but if he can get away with something he'll do it. If he has something in his mouth that he's not supposed to and I say, "What is that? What do you have?" he'll zip all over the house and I have ti chase him down. Silly boy |
Instead of chasing him around trying to retrieve something from his mouth that can kill him, train him the command DROP IT. I know it's cute and funny to chase the lil bugger, they are so adorable, cute and so funny, but this is life threating. You MUST teach him to DROP IT for the safety of his precious lil life. |

He does know the command, and we're still working on it, but he': stubborn and wants everything his way. If the item is big I can grab it and tell him leave it, and eventually he will, but if it's small enough to fit entirely in his mouth he will take off, eapecially if he already has it in his mouth. |

Chewie loved her rawhide bones so much that I had to take them away. She's a very tough chewer and there were a few times despite me holding them for her she swallowed some. I ended up switching her to lamb ears, and although I was nervous a few months ago with one of those pieces she swallowed whole, I realized that it's so thin that she'd be fine. |
I just looked at my new package of smart sticks rawhide alternative and they are now made in Vietnam. Don't know if that is any better than China though. |
