Very Loose, black bloody stool (diarrhea?), minimal vomit (some blood) Ariel is almost 3 years old. She's acting fine, gums are pink, drinking normally. Two days ago, she had soft stool. The hubby said diarrhea. Yesterday, at the park, midday, she dropped a few small drops of black, jelly like unformed stool. This morning, she had soft stool, but formed, normal color, no blood, so I was relieved. There was a small amount of orange vomit, with tiny flecks of red. Possibly blood. At about 3:30 pm, she had a large amount of black diarrhea, very bloody. It was jelly-ish. We called the vet and they told us to call back in the morning to see if they have any cancellations. I fasted her for 12 hours today, from noon to midnight. At midnight, I gave her soft boiled rice with a little bit of sweet potato and boiled chicken breast. I hand fed her little bits at a time, otherwise she'd eat it too fast and I don't know how her stomach will take it. Her appetite is fine, energy is good, mood is great. I actually tried to keep her from being too active. So yesterday and today, small amount of vomit, possible blood. Yesterday, black jellyish stool, small amount. Today, large amount of bloody black unformed (very loose) stool. A few days ago, we gave her a pill for flea treatment. She has taken them before without issue. 3 days ago, we gave her some food from a salad bar, (chicken, boiled egg), and I got a piece of grass fed ground beef. She normally tolerates these things, however, I don't know if she's ever had people-food ground beef before. (Sample from Whole Foods) She has also eaten rabbit poop, and I found her eating something -- maybe grass, in a park. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? What I should do? We will be taking her to a vet soon. What should we ask for? What tests? What should we watch out for (from the vet)? She is my first dog. I am not experienced. Thank you for any help. |
I would be concerned over the rabbit poop and whatever she ate at the park...which could've been anything. You need to put her stool into a baggie and take it to the vet to be looked at asap. I would NOT wait when you're talking about multiple days now of black stool! |
It's 4:30 a.m. right now. The vet told us to call back in the morning to see if there are any cancellations. They open at 7:30. If none, we will be taking her to another vet who can take us. |
I would definitely take her to the vet asap. Blood is not good and black stool can mean internal bleeding. |

well she normally poops 1st thing in the morning, but did not today, so I am unable to bring a stool sample. Probably because I didn't give her her regular food, I gave her rice and boiled chicken. Her diarrhea is usually later in the day, around 3-4 pm. So we will be bringing her to the vet earlier than that. She's acting fine. I hope she's ok. |

Update Took her to a new vet. What a difference! The last place we went to, it was a constant sales pitch. This new vet was great. He said her vitals were good, she's happy, acting normal, temperature ok, heartrate ok. We didn't have a stool sample because I'd put her on a bland diet. Anyway, after we brought her back from the vet, she pooped and it looked soft, but more normal. No blood, normal color. We collected it and went back to the vet to test her normal looking poop. But that's ok. Better safe than sorry. Although I didn't have a sample of the bloody poop, I told the vet I'd taken a picture (I know, gross, but I thought I might need it for the vet), and he took a look at it and was able to tell where it was coming from. I don't feel out of the woods yet, because yesterday morning, she had a semi normal poop right before a bloody one, but the vet said he thinks it was just a reaction to something she ate and she should be ok. He prescribed Metronidazole and some probiotics, and told me to continue the bland diet I'd been giving her. The internet recipe I found had 25% protein to rice, but he said 50%, so I'll add some more boiled skinless chicken breast. She loves it. I hand fed her, not because she's spoiled, but because she was so hungry, I was afraid she'd choke on it the way she wanted to scarf it down so fast. I have met other yorkie owners who say their dog never eats, but mine is a little piglet and loves to eat everything! That's how we got in this predicament. |

poops are a different color...yellow-ish, but solid, and no more diarrhea. Big relief. Have not gotten results back from her fecal test. Have her on bland diet, plus I will dose her one more time with the medicine, and vet gave us probiotics. Told us to keep her on the bland diet for 4 days. |
Dog food My yorkies had the same stool problem. Took in poop samples and nothing found. I bet it was a bad bag of wellness turkey and oatmeal. Had them on chicken and rice. Vet said sensitive stomach so they are on hills ID. It has taken awhile but finally decent stool. Check your food. Whathe were you feeding her. Some foods cause these reactions. On this site are some Very knowledgeable Yorke lovers who will give great advice. Keep logging on and my prayers for your little yorkie. |
Sounds like you are doing everything right. Remember true diarrhea is based on frequency not consistency. My last vet trip for digestive issues was my giving a tiny piece of steak which caused frequent bloody jelly diarrhea. I happened to have another dog going to vet at 6 am for a surgery the next day so I just brought them both. He gave her an antibiotic shot and she was cured that day. I have a house rabbit and mine have eaten her poop. My vet wasn't concerned, but maybe because of it being an indoor rabbit. |
