question regarding collapse trachea I have a 13 yr old lil girl who just been diagnosed with a collapse trachea. She has been coughing for about 1 month, and vet said its CT. Now every where I read CT cough should sound like a goose seal honk, but hers just sound like a dry hacking cough, like she got something stuck in her throat. She cough usually when she's eating or drinking, and while she's resting on her bed. Now my question isn't the earliest sign of CT the honking cough should happen when the dog is panting / excited?? Vet said heart is good, no murmur, no sign of pneumonia, fluid in lung, etc. So vet advised me to get a HEPA filter and use eucalyptus oil with vapor steamer. I read some good review about eucalyptus oil though. I know alot of you dealing with this horrible CT, so any of you use eucalyptus oil instead of the cough suppressant? My gal also has an early stage of kidney failure, but she's doing well, I home cooked for her in the past 3 years, make sure she get all the fluids she need. So my vet and I personally mind those heavy effect of cough suppressant steroid etc on the kidney. I know we are supposed to suppress the cough, but my vet said she's not so bad now, just the beginning stage of CT, so she advised I try eucalyptus oil first. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you |
If you trust your vet's experience w/ CT - I suppose I'd try the suggestions...? But if you do think the cough is just too tough on her, I wouldn't hesitate to push hard for a suppressant. So sorry your little one is going thru this :(. |
Coughing further irritates the respiratory tract so supressing is a good idea. I have used eucalyptus for myself and it does seem to help clear airways. I just sniff the bottle and have never vaporized it. I do better with dry climates and cough more with moisture in air. Coughing can happen while eating or drinking but I have never heard of CT being first diagnosed at this age. You could try a glucosamine chrondroiton msm supplement to strengthen the cartilage. Extra weight makes the condition worse and make sure she isn't around smoke or any cleaning products. I would be a little concerned about heart issues or respiratory infection being the cause of the cough though since you have never had this problem before. Not sure if just a stethoscope can rule out all heart conditions but listening to lungs should be able to tell respiratory issues. Is she on heartworm meds? |
My boy has had this for several years. He gets the cough every time after drinking water and many times can just wake up in the middle of the night with a horrible, non-stop cough. He is on twice daily I think doxycycline (supposed to help with inflammation) and a hydrocodone/tusson cough pill as needed. I notice the cough seems more frequent in the summer due to the heat. |
I have had a few pups with CT. Each of them had a different protocol....in my opinion you really just have to play with different meds to find what works best. Other things to do is to reduce stress in the environment, keep the pup cool, avoid strenuous exercise and keep weight down. There is a med that might help and it would not cause issues with her kidneys.....Lomotil. It sounded weird to me when my vet first suggested it because it is an anti diarrheal. If your vet has not heard about using it, tell him he can find a section about it in Kirk's Vet Manual. It worked for one of my pups and also one of a friend's pups. http://yorkiehavenrescue.com/lomotil/ There are two links that you must click on in order to view the article. :) |
My parent's recently had one with this. His cough sounded like a honk and occurred when he was excited and running around. |
Hi I am not sure if you already took some steps regarding this issue, but the type of cough you are describing could be cause by a heart condition. I know this because this past February my 15 yr old havanese die from it. If you have not done anything yet, I would advise xrays and CT scan to eliminate the possibility of a heart condition which by the way is very common in small senior dogs. Wish you the best... I hope you dont have to go through what I experienced J |
Chester has CT as well and allergies, I have a great air cleaner I use, I think it helps |
