MVD/Seizure Help Hello All. My yorkie will be 5 years old next month. He has suspected MVD. We decided not to do the biopsy because he would still have to be on lactulose and hepatic diet as well as denamarin. He has been doing extremely well since he was a puppy, but lately we have noticed he has a seizure about every month or so. I want to prolong the quality of his life and the veterinarian says his numbers and values are actually really good. Is there anything we can do to prevent the seizures? We give him Diazepam (Valium) immediately when the seizures begin to occur (as instructed by the veterinarian) but we want to really get him to the point where he no longer has them. The seizures usually last several minutes and immediately ends after he vomits bile. For those who are really good with understanding these diagnostics figures and can help me better care for him, ill include this info. Many thanks to the experienced Yorkie parents on this forum. Well I am not a vet....but around here the liver guru is Dr Karen Tobias at the University of Tennessee. People travel from all over to see her. You might contact her for some further conversation with a specialist. Wishing you all the best! |

Well you could try to call her at the University of Tennessee, College of Veteranarian Medicine. Knoxville ,TN The only number I saw was for animal emergency 865-974-8387. It they may be able to get you in contact. You could fax her the information you have , but at least talk with her. I know liver shunt is her specialty. |
Poor sweet baby. My Tibbe was diagnosed 5 years ago with MVD. Hope you can get an appt. with a specialist ASAP. Please keep us updated and I'll add your little one to my prayer list. |
You can find all information on UT Vet on the site. I have used them for 2 years with another issue. They are the best around. Highly recommend you try and get an appointment soon. Best of luck. |
I'm curious to know if there are other specialist outside of knoxville as it would be a 10hr drive to get there, and also im not sure if my vet would do the recommendation that would be needed to go there. |
Yes, that is a long drive. From what I know by using U.T. Vet. Hospital you don't need a referral. Hope your baby gets better. |
U.T.in Knoxville, Tn is a wonderful place, i took Micah there 7or 8 yrs ago, he will be nine in oct this year and is doing great..they were everything that you could ever ask for...I give them a A+++ |
