Constipation
 
:confused: Porsche is 13 and 1/2 and started refusing to eat her regular food. Now I am feeding her Fresh Food. She loves it, but now she is constipated. What can I do to help her?:confused::confused:

Our pup is only 2.5 years old but she tends to be more constipated. Pureed pumpkin (on the advice of our breeder) helps keep her regular. We used good quality canned pureed pumpkin.

You can try some pumpkin or a bit of mineral oil...but how long has she been constipated?

At her age, I'd be extra careful!

It takes very little pureed pumpkin to do the trick. We titrate it in teaspoons. It generally only takes 2 or 3 teaspoons for a couple of days to ease the problem. What it does is regulate the water balance in the digestive track. It's gentle. It's not a laxative.

Pure canned pumpkin OR fresh or frozen thawed green beans also work very well OR apple as it has pectin & works for diarrhea & constipation.

We also had tried apples as applesauce but it turned out our pup is allergic to apple so we used just pumpkin. Never heard of beans before but we'll keep that in mind.

She goes #2 but it is like little bunny poop. I used pumpkin for diarrhea, but never for constipation. Thank you all! I will try this. I am just so glad she is eating eagerly.:)

Did you make the applesauce or buy it ? IF you bought it, it may have been an ingredient in the product such as preservatives that she was allergic to. Yes, my vet told me about the green beans & it worked great.

Interesting on the preservatives in applesauce. We did use store bought so sometime maybe I'll try homemade. Thanks!

I agree with the pumpkin. Put it in an ice cube tray and freeze and then place in ziploc in freezer so you can just take out a cube every other day. If she won't eat it I have had good luck with Nutrical or Nutristat and the extra vitamins won't hurt at her age.

Both conditions are related to the water balance in the bowels. So, to would make sense it could work for both. The reason we give pumpkin to ours is the bunny poops! New name for us. We call them raisins. ;)
