Yorkie passing out and choking Hi, My 12 year old yorkie has gagged and spit up yellow stuff before, but today he was gagging and a little bit of yellow stuff was coming out of his nose and he just fell over. He has passed out a couple times before. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks, Heather |
I've had this terrifying experience once with Teddy when he was about a year old. He had eaten a Texas Toothpick treat that upset his stomach. He vomited big pieces of it and passed out for a second or two. His eyes rolled back into his head, and I thought he was dying. :(:(:( I did not think we would make it to the ER in time, but he came around. The concern in a situation like this is aspiration, fluid and other materials going into the lungs, down the wrong pipe. It's like drowning, and can be fatal or cause serious lung complications. The second concern is material getting caught in the throat causing a choking situation. Talk to your vet about what to do. If your boy hasn't had a recent checkup, it would be a good idea to check bloodwork and his throat and lungs and heart. If he tends to throw up bile in the morning, try having him eat a little of his regular food before bedtime. Another possibility is GERD, or acid reflux. Your vet can recommend a medicine regime to help with that and avoid the vomiting. |
Our Bella has never passed out from choking, but she did aspirate (inhale) vomit once when she was suffering from acid reflux, and we had to take her to the emergency vet at the University of Illinois Veterinary College when she wouldn't stop coughing. She recovered at the vet's, and we ended up treating her acid reflux with more frequent feedings so her stomach is never completely empty. They gave us the option of giving her low dose Prilosec, but we didn't want to pill her every day if the frequent feedings worked. Fortunately, the frequent feedings have worked well. BTW, I can't say enough good things about the University of Illinois emergency vet services. They were inexpensive, and they treated her like the little princess that she is, so here's a shout-out to them! If the vomit is coming out of the nose, then there is a definitely a risk of aspiration, so please get your dog to a vet and try to get to the bottom of the vomiting. |
If he's passing out then he needs to see a vet ASAP as he may be having a heart issue & if left untreated it could kill him. |

I completely agree about the care they get at Universities! Our Bella went to the University of Florida Vet School. We got great service, pretty good price, and to top it off, the specialist who teaches vets how to do the surgery is the one who performed on our little girl. They saved her life and for that I will forever be grateful. |

yes! I have once with Livie. She had eaten a lot of pineapple the night before and the next day she kind of gagged once and then passed out under my bed. It was the only time it happened so i freaked out and gave her cpr, and took her to the er vet. Good thing i was there! They said she was acting like she ingested poison but the only thing she ate was a lot of pineapple. I think the acid did her bad :/ It was scary! |
