Lolita's skin very itchy and losing hair after "Flea & Tick Shampoo" 1 Attachment(s) Hi everyone, After a trip to Florida my Lolita came back with fleas :(. I went to my local TJ-Maxx and got her a bottle of "My Super Dog - Flea & Tick Dog Shampoo" to fix the problem. After the first wash I noticed that she was scratching more than usual.... the next day I came back from work and noticed hair all over my house... I inspected her and noticed a larger part of her rear leg/thigh completely shaved off.... I almost cried.... :( My mind went immediately to the NEW shampoo i used on her... I gave her another bath to remove any residue of the "flea & tick" shampoo... and it seems now that her itching has stopped. Has anyone else had similar experiences? I want to make sure that it's the shampoo and nothing else. Her behavior has not changed... she's still as playful and loving as always. thanks, Marcelo Lolita (4.5 years old) |
I'm not a fan of flea and tick shampoos. You are better off using regular shampoo, a soothing one. Lather up your pup generously with the shampoo, let it sit for a minute or too while you continue to massage, rinse really well. Then condition. Get a flea preventative from your vet. Even if you use it only temporarily, since this was something picked up on vacation. Wash bedding frequently and vacuum daily to get rid of fleas/eggs. Teddy is highly allergic to flea bites. All it takes it one flea to send him into an itching frenzy even when the flea is gone. We have a spray from the vet to treat his flea bites for the once a year run in with a flea or two. Definitely worth the relief for him. We are still struggling to find an effective flea preventative for him that works and that he can tolerate. |
Dog I rescued a yorkie. Daisy is 9lbs. Vet put her on a month of Nexcare to be sure fleas were gone. He saw a few on exam. I use hylyte shampoo and conditioner. I get it at my vets. You v Can order it from pet meds.com. great and hypoallergic. |
Sounds like she is allergic to flea bites. If still itching, I'd get to the vet asap before more hair is lost and get her on a steroid for a bit. So, she doesn't have any "hot spots" or red patchy areas on the skin? Scabs? |
Cody has environmental allergies, my vet told me to use Hylyte shampoo and hylyte "Bath Spray" my vet said you can bathe dog every day using Hylyte shampoo because it is hypoallergenic and gentle on their skin , the "bath spray" can be used as a dry bath, also you can mix 5 capsfuls to 1/2 gal of water and use as a leave in conditioner. The regular conditioner has to be left in for 10 minutes, I prefer the "bath Spray" it's a 2 for 1. You can get Hylyte shampoo, conditioner, and Bath Spray from your vet, amazon.com also sells it. BUT it is NOT used to kill fleas and ticks. |
Thank you all for your responses.... I'll keep an eye out to see if her condition improves. I have noticed that her itching has stopped. Marcelo |
Those kinds of shampoos are often too harsh, capstar is good is you pick up fleas for a one time thing, if they are not on something already. Dawn dish soap can kill fleas, but rinse really well, and dilute it down, good luck |
