Liver shunt My 11 year old yorkie has a liver shunt. Has anyone else experienced this with an older dog? What did you do? The vet doesn't recommend surgery due to his age. Right how he's happy and healthy, eating well, keeping weight on. |
If he were mine at 11 yrs old i would keep on doing what you are doing now since he is healthy otherwise ,but the vet may recommend lower protein food for him this is what they usually do |

Science diet makes a really good prescription food called L/D it's specifically formulated for dogs with Liver issues. |
My Yorkie Cricket has this issue. She is 3 years old though. She had the surgery as a puppy, but she has MVD so she will most likely be on prescription food for the rest of her life. She eats the science diet l/D dry food with no issues. She weighs about 8 lbs and I love her! :D |
Our Bella had a liver shunt. We did the surgery but her numbers were still higher than we wanted to see. We started her on Denamarin and her numbers fell into the good range. We still only feed her Science Diet L/D as it has a lower protein ratio which also helps her liver not have to work as hard. |
You didn't say why your vet is against a shunt repair. It really is not a difficult surgery and would certainly be the way I would go. Your pup is at a high risk for bladder stones...did your vet discuss that with you? He would then have to have surgery to remove them. Unless your pup is a high risk candidate and has other severe health issues, I would personally get a second opinion...and probably from a board certified specialist. Either internal med or surgical.....see what they think. Here is a thread about my Teddy Bear who had a liver shunt a few years ago.
