Coughing and previous diagnosis of CT Buddy is 10 years old and runs, fetches the ball until your arm is tired and is a happy camper for the most part.:) At 5 years old I was told he had a collapsed trachea.:( I recently inquired about it, they said he was too old for the surgery. He has started coughing a lot with an electric heater .. NOT using anymore but the cough has persisted. Coughing like crazy in the morning. I am thinking maybe a vaporizer would help?? He has gotten older now and his CT is progressing.. anyone know about this in an older yorkie with this condition? or could it be something else. What might be needed in a Yorkie that is older and has CT??. Please anyone let me know your thoughts. Thanks a ton, Henry |
You have him on meds...right? Bc CT dogs do need meds to mitigate the symptoms. What cough suppressant is he on? |
Medicine for CT Buddy is taking just at night 1/4 tablet of Homatropine and Hydrocodone 1.5 mg / 5 mg. He actually seems pretty good during the day there is no symptoms. Just in the morning he gets up and clears his throat or at night he has a hellish cough. I can see it in his eyes that he knows something is wrong. I try like crazy to make feel good, little guy should not have to go thru this. I was thinking a vaporizer would be good. He goes back to the doctor on the 15th. I know folks must of gone thru this phase. I think more exercise during the day so he gets very sound sleep would be great. Going to try that. |
Exercise is not good for a dog with CT. It can make it worse. Your suppose to keep them calm. There is other drugs besides the cough medicine. Hopefully someone will come on and let you know what they are. I know one is predisone to help with inflammation. |
As Mindy10 said, exercise is not recommended for pups with CT. If he is having problems sleeping due to coughing, you might want to ask your vet for another med that could help him get some rest. There are many meds that can be used. I have had a few pups with CT and each of them responded to different meds. It is just a trial and error kind of thing to find what works best. Good luck! |
CT and exercise I beg to differ Articles on it …none have said exercise when he has coughing episodes but they all indicate lose weight. So you ladies are right, no rigorous exercise when he is feeling bad. I only take him out when he want to go out. Buddy loves to chase and catch the ball. Then he trots home almost a mile with the ball in his mouth and happy as a clam. I have people tell me that is a happy dog, looks like he is smiling. I will not take that away from him. I will watch him more closely as he gets a fit of coughing and not exercise him waiting for him to feel better and be calm. Also, I have read a lot more than I had anticipated, I do give him vitamins and glucosamine chondroitin. I am a firm believer in vitamins and I have seen him lapse from coughing so it is working. I am glad you ladies where kind enough to response. I was certain one said exercise but I cannot seem to find it but they all say reduce their weight that is the prime factor. One article that was the best and actually had good results with holistic treatment was Living With Intrathoracic Tracheal Collapse - Dog Mom Days I was going to buy a vaporizer, now for sure I will. There are many articles that talk about the stent and operation but he is beyond surgery because of his age. He is 10 years old and I don’t know how long he will be around now... the clock is ticking. I will have the best of fun with him, he is worth is weight in gold. Thanks, and Best Regards, Henry |
I don't believe it!! IT WORKS I bought a little bottle of organic Eucalyptus Radiata a small diffuser call HerbalAir diffuser and added 60 mil of water and 3 to 5 drops of the oil. It has been almost a day. It lets off this cool mist and he sleeps right next to it and works for three hours. He tried to cough and could not .. I am bit flabbergasted... to say the least. It works ! I am hoping I bought another decade with this little guy. Here is a link for the diffuser. https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/sto...F0waAmi38P8HAQ |
