Lola's having GI problems For the past few weeks she's been throwing up yellow foam on and off in the morning, I thought it was from her new food flavor (same brand) so I switched her back and she was doing better. I think she may be having some reflux issues. At 4am she threw up orange foam with a few blood flecks in it. She did it again around noon. At 6pm her stool was tarry with some blood and mucus in it. So we decided to take her to the ER vet tonight instead of the regular vet tomorrow. I brought the stool sample and paper towels I cleaned up the throw up with. She's mostly acting normal just subdued, she really perked up in the car and in the waiting room. At the vet now, waiting for bloodwork. They recommend an xray or ultrasound but won't say which is better. She's almost 4 years old and about 8lbs, a bit chubby. |
Our thoughts are with you. |
Thanks Maxdog. We're home now and she's begging for her nightly treat (not getting it, but interest is good). Amylase is elevated, 3342, range is 200-1800, everything else is good. They gave her injectable maropitant (antinausea) and a few days of oral liquid metronidazole. They also said to give her chicken and rice for a few days starting tomorrow. We're going to wait and see how she does before doing the imaging. |
Hmmmm...wonder what's going on here, poor baby! How is she doing today? Amylase could just be elevated from vomiting, as that can rise with vomiting. If you suspect reflux, then Pepcid is excellent - are you starting that...? |
She's still a bit subdued but she's showing some spunk. I'll really see how she's feeling when my aunt comes over later, Lola LOVES her and always wants her full attention. She ate a large tablespoon of chicken and rice for breakfast (didn't finish what I gave her) and a few cheerios. I gave her the liquid meds without a problem. No vomiting and she hasn't had a BM, but the ER vet said she may not go for a few days because of the meds. The ER vet didn't tell me to give her pepcid but I could try it. Thanks :) |
How did she do with your Aunt...? Hope she continues to feel better :). |
Thanks My aunt didn't come over yesterday but the neighbors kid came today, Lola was very excited and kissed her to death. She seems much better, just a little tired and has horrible gas, poor pup is so upset about the smell lol. Her appetite is good, she ate her chicken and some cheerios but she won't touch the rice. She still hasn't had a BM though, the ER vet called to check on her and said that's normal. |
What's the word/decision on starting the Pepcid...? |
I'm happy to hear Lola is doing better. Hoping she returns to herself completely soon. Sending well wishes. |
She's doing so much better, acting totally normal and she's pooped twice, it was mucusy last night but normal today. Her appetite is excellent too, I had to take her plate and hand feed her tonight because she was eating way too fast. I bought the pepcid, I'll give it to her if she throws up again. I've been feeding her a snack at 10pm with her antibiotic, so that may be helping. Tomorrow is her last day of antibiotics. Thanks for the help and well wishes. |
Happy to hear Lola is doing better. :) |

Sounds she had a bit of colitis.....Duchess has bouts of colitis from time to time and her symptoms are identical. It's usually brought on by food. She's on a strict diet because of it. |

She hasn't thrown up since Thursday so I don't want to give her meds if she doesn't need them. If she throws up again I'll start giving it to her. Thanks for checking Quote:
