Pancreatitis Hi all Has anyone here had and issues / experience with pancreatitis. My baby was rushed to the hospital on Saturday afternoon and has been diagnosed with Pancreatitis. She is a very tiny (2lbs, 2 years old) girl and I am so scared for her. She has been at the vets for just over 24 hours and they've already charged me $3,000 which is rediculus. I feel like they are guessing at their diagnosis because they haven't found anything else. I always feed her high quality food, never table scraps, dehydrated apples or she shares a banana with me as a snack. I've recently changed her food to Instinct Raw Boost dog food which is kibbles with freeze dried protein pieces in it. Any advice would be appreciated. |
I wouldn't doubt that these vets are correct in their diagnosis since pancreatitis is very common to yorkies and can happen at any time. It's life threatening, extremely painful, and very debilitating - so keep this all in mind as your little one heals. Going forward, a special diet will likely be needed for life. |
In the past one of my Yorkies had one very bad episode of pancreatitis. She spent six weeks seriously ill and we thought we would lose her. She was six years old and lived another eight years when she got another episode and didn't recover due to other complications. While she was alive I kept her on two meals a day - chicken and rice and low fat kibble. |
Pancreatitis So sorry to hear your tiny girl was sick. Hope by now she is well on the mend. If she is prone to P which Yorkie tend to be, the raw food is probably too high in fat. Did the vet do a P specific test? I know the test isn't perfect, but they can do a spec CPL test in the office and then a more accurate one later that has to be sent away. The snap test is only qualitative and the other gives numbers that show how bad the P is. When my dog had only a mild P attack, diagnosed by blood and snap tests, he was not very sick and after a week on lean chicken and rice he was fine. Since then I have only fed Hills prescription ID Low Fat kibble. and canned. No treats and I watch any food I do give him for fat content. He has been fine since then. Of course it may not be P and I am sure the vet has completed the dx by now. Please let us know how your baby is doing and what the dx and treatments were. Thanks. |
