My Yorkie has a scratched eye retina Buddy is ten years old and a day has never gone by where someone has not smiled wherever I take him. :) We live in San Francisco, he kept squinting and seemed to have an issue. The vet stained the eye and said it was a scratch and gave me some antibiotic ointment to put on his eye, every 12 hours. I stopped after a couple days seemed to have taken care of the issue. Then he started squinting again. I have been giving him the antibiotics, religiously and it seems like it is going away but it is still red. I am a bit concerned. He is very healthy otherwise. Has anyone had this issue before? Please let me now as soon as possible. I think it should have healed by now. Any advise would be much appreciated. How long does it take to heal?? Thanks a ton ahead of time. |
Please, don't ever, ever stop a medication like that again - that's exactly how antibiotic-resistant germs are created. There is a *very* good reason meds are given for a certain amount of time, and now you're seeing why. Is he still squinting? If so, you truly need to take him in ASAP. Redness is one thing, squinting / being unable to keep eye open means - GO TO VET. |
Max has had several scratches and corneal ulcers. I agree with Ann, keep giving the medication/applying the ointment as directed by your vet. Usually it is 1 week, or about 10 days. The vet should also do a follow up in 1 week, stain the eye again, to make sure the scratch is healed. Cool, fresh air also helped Max's eye heal. Warm weather and any heat source aggravated it. Make sure your little guy isn't rubbing his eye. Max had to wear a cone sometimes. |
Buddy retina issue :) Wow you folks are wonderful. Yes he has stopped squinting and it appears that he is getting better. I will apply the ointment for 10 days and will take him for a stain again. He looks good and eye is open and bright most of the time. Again Thanks a ton, Henry:thumbup: |
Wonderful - keep us posted on the little feller. :) |
Oh, I am so glad you posted and listened! Your pup could end up losing an eye...when there is a scratch on the eye it is very important to do exactly as the vet says and that always includes a follow up! Please update after the recheck! Happy Thanksgiving! :) |
And just to answer another of your questions in the OP, eyes take a very long time to heal. I have had a scratch on the eye before and can personally attest to that! |
Henryoh, another tip from experience: don't wash your baby's head for a couple weeks. When the cornea first heals, the layer of cells can be weak. Water and potential soap in the eye can cause problems. Give it time to strengthen. Russ, ouch! Every human I've known with a scratch has taken a long time to heal. With Max's corneal ulcers and scratches, some of them closed up overnight. It was still important to keep giving the medicine. Max had one ulcer that would not heal and he was scheduled for surgery, grid keratotomy. The 'hole' of the ulcer closed within 2 hours that morning. I had the vet take a look and confirm, and surgery was cancelled. Hooray! |
He is showing good signs !! OMG !! He is getting better .. his eye is not red anymore just watery a lil because of the medicine. Thank you so much, yes I can still see the scratch ...two month to heal ..yes I think you are right. I will keep giving him the antibiotic ointment for 10 days ... maybe longer. I think it has been about 10 days I have a an appointment with the vet.. I think Dec. 7th. I wish I could post his picture I took today.... Oh great I attached his picture as of today !! I will post a URL soon where you can see him ..such a great buddy. Thanks a ton, Henry |
I took him to the vet.. seen a different vet.. I just received an email from regular vet Polly James in San Francisco. Weeehhheee she is great. Mr. Buddy eye is getting better, the scratch is growing smaller and it is almost time to quit the ointment. I was a bit anxious but Polly put my fears to rest. He has just a tiny bit of infection. I will see her in approximately a week or more. Little guy is more of a son than a dog. LOL. He has always been good to me so I have to reciprocate. |
Happy to hear your boy is doing better!! :) |
