Risks outweigh benefits
 
My little sweetheart is eating with gusto for the first time since she was dx'd with giardia. Her tummy is no longer talking to me from across the room; Generally she's eager to eat, and much more energetic.

Problem is, now her bms are either soft or, black, like I just saw a few minutes ago. She just can't catch a FREAKING break! what am i supposed to do NOW? She doesn't deserve to have tummy pain; and if it's going to cause black poop how can I fix this? she's on .3 ml of prilosec. And it's actually helping. If you discount her black bms.

Not to be an alarmist but black can sometimes be an indication of blood in the stool, maybe take a fecal sample to the vet to re evaluate?

I wonder if the Medicine you are giving her is making her stools black. I know pepto can. I would call the vet or bring a poop sample in. Hope your little one gets well soon. Susan

If it were me would bring stool sample and my baby to the vet. My vet is 45 minutes from me, speaking for myself, I wouldn't bring just the stool, if they wanted to look at Cody I would have to go allllll the way back home and come back, to save a possible 2 hour I would take him.

yep!!! Tried that right away. Her doc is in surgery today. her next stool wasn't black, but did have mucous- and then, of course, since her stool was off, she wouldn't eat. So she regurgitated all of the hamburger- like a tablespoon- I gave her just 20 minutes before. I insisted that someone call me immediately to stop her nausea so she can eat. I actually said, if someone does NOT, I'll go to another vet, but she needs to not vomit by this afternoon. I know what her issue is. She's sick from being hungry ,and then she's sick from not eating so she's not hungry.

Oh, not at all Lilah- an alarmist, I mean. her vet and I discussed her issues last week, and we purposely started with the priolosec. I have Crohns disease, and her vet has IBD. We discussed for 20 minutes just how much crap we went through before finding a regimen that worked. I see and know what's going on, and It sucks so badly that I know, but I can't help her. I've also had blood in my stools, so I know exactly what black means. I also know that it can be the smallest of cuts sometimes, or an irritation, so I usually don't sound the alarm unless it's more than 2 in a 24 hour period. I believe Chewie has something called bilious vomiting syndrome. Her vet is certain, but we also have plans in case the prilosec isn't helping. I know from experience that I do need to give it time to work, it's just hard watching her suffer.

Poor lil Chewie, makes us feel so helpless when they are sick and won't eat.

Thank goodness for hubby. Chews threw up twice more when I was napping. So he called the vet, receptionist did the whole let's put him off BS like she did with me, and whatever hubby did they immediately went back and spoke to the vet. Where before I was told they'd ask her on her way out of the building.
