Bloat 1 Attachment(s) My little 3 year old 3 pound Yorkie/Maltese mix has a bloated tummy. This has been an issue off and on for a few weeks. I feed her Royal Canin twice a day with a teaspoon of Little Cesar's added in the Evening. I took her to her Vet and he said she was active and not in discomfort so nothing was done. I have cut down on her food amounts but she is still noticeably bloated. She is not fat, and her sister who eats more doesn't have the same issue. Should I change her food? |
She's so cute!! I would switch the food. All pups are different. My older boy did fine on one food and the younger or had issues. It takes time to find the right one in my opinion. Best wishes! Hope her tummy issues go away soon! |
Caesar just had a recall. |
It's no different, really, than it is for humans -- if/when we're bloated, we try to find out why and then avoid that food. Same with dogs. You should switch foods and get one w/ a different protein/carb source. Royal Canin has a ton of corn in it, btw, which is horrible for many dogs' digestive systems - get something without the corn...like Natures Logic Venison or something... |
Hopefully you're able to find a better food for her to relieve her of the bloat. My two little ones are on Fromm Grain Free kibble, which they do well on. She's SUPER cute btw! |

Also, if she has been doing well on the same food for theee years and this behavior just began a couple of weeks ago I would want to investigate a little further especially on that recall and see if your food was affected. |
how do you know she has a bloated tummy? |
It may not be bloat. But when I pick her up, it feels as if she ate an entire 12 oz can of dog food. I switched her over to wellness canned food this week. I considered that she may just have a pot belly, and reduced her portions, but she feels bony other than her fat little belly. So I've been giving her half of a 3.2 ounce can of food twice a day. I'm taking her back to the Vet tomorrow, they will do blood tests and possibly an X-ray. |

CBC results came back for Tulip and showed dangerously low blood protein levels. The Vet suspects liver shunt and referred me to a specialty clinic for an ultrasound. I will take Tulip for her ultrasound tomorrow and I hope and pray that what she has is treatable. I worry they will want to keep her there and that she will be scared without me. |
Tulip has PLE, she had a plasma transfusion last week and her bloat was gone within 2 days, she is on prednisone and special diet. Tulip also has giardia an intestinal parasite. We are giving her medicine for that too, as well as our other 2 dogs. We hope that the giardia in a dog as small as Tulip actually caused the PLE, but blood tests next week will measure her protein, and we will test again for giardia. Tulip eats like a horse but struggles to gain weight. She is a fighter! |
Hope things are still going well for your little one! |
I hope she continues to do better |
Oh goodness, I wish I had seen this sooner. I have a pup with PLE .. and that classic bloat is so common with them. I am glad you got to a vet and got her diagnosed!! You didn't mention her diet, but hopefully they have put her on a prescription diet. Royal Canin Gastro diet is often recommended for PLE pups. She needs a very low fat diet. I opted to do a consult with a vet nutritionist and home cook for Cookie. Here is a thread that you may find informative about my pup, Cookie. She was diagnosed with PLE in 2011. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ia-update.html Prayers for your baby girl...hope she is doing well. |
Tulips last visit to vet was good news. Her blood albumin level is 2.3, with 2.5 being normal. For now she will stay on a diet of hydrolized protein along with cooked ground turkey and vitamins . She will stay on Prednisone for now. Next appointment is one month, hopefully then we can wean her off the steroids. Tulip is alert and active, even tussling with her sister. |
