Coughing/Hacking Noise
 
Hello, this is my first post. I am a little concerned about Buddy. He is 17 weeks and after his first trip to the vet at 12 wks, he immediately started coughing by the next morning. I waited about a week to see if it would go away, but it didn't. I took Buddy back to the vet and they said it was kennel cough and gave him a shot and antibiotics for 2wks. He is still coughing and it doesn't seem like the antibiotics did anything, but take my money. He went back to the vet yesterday for his final shots and he told me to give him some children's Benedryl? Any suggestions?

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Did Buddy have the bordetella vaccination at the 12 week visit? Many pups actually develop kennel cough after having the vaccination.

From what I have read, the cough can take a long time to go away. I don't have personal experience with it, but I'm sure other members here will share how long it took their dogs to recover.

Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby. Sorry I cannot offer suggestion / advise as I never had a dog with kennel cough. Hoping this clears up soon.

Yes, the cough can take a long time to go away. You have to be careful with bordatella as it can easily lead to pneumonia so you AND your vet need to monitor him closely till his cough is gone. I'm guessing he had the bordatella vaccine on his 1st visit & that's why he got bordatella. I had a dog who never fully recovered from the intranasal bordatella as it damaged his sinus cavity & he had cronic rhinitis his whole life & I will NEVER allow my pets to be vaccinated intranasally again.

Did your vet give bordetella / kennel cough vaccine at that first visit...? If yes, then your puppy contracted kennel cough from it. I would not get this vaccine again, btw - it's not needed - it's NOT a core vaccine.

The thing you need to worry about right now is preventing the kennel cough from progressing to pneumonia - which can happen easily and quickly in puppies, and can be deadly. If the cough is not improving, you DO need to go back to the vet and this pup should be on meds, including a cough suppressant.

And btw, this cough could easily take 3-8 weeks to be gone...

Buddy did not get the Bordatella vacine the first time I took him. He had already had his first round of shots when I got him from the breeder. He just got the nasal vaccine, this last visit. I think he got kennel cough from visiting the vet, from another sick dog. The antibiotics early didn't clear up anything. I guess, I will just keep an eye on it. He isn't getting worse. I just hate hearing it. It sounds like he is choking or coughing up a hairball sometimes. Thanks for your input.

UMM the Nasal Vaccine is the Bordatella Vac. I never give mine the Nasal one, they always get the injectable Vac of this. They have to have this as mine go to the groomer.

If your kiddo got the nasal vaccine - then he indeed DID get the kennel cough vaccine - the nasal IS the vaccine. He got kennel cough FROM that vaccine, in all likelihood - believe me; it happens all the time to owners unaware of this.

He still needs medication. He needs a suppressant from the vet. He needs to be rechecked by the vet to see if this is now pneumonia. Is there a reason you don't want to take him in again...?

Please take this pup back to the vet. When my WolfHound got the intranasal bordatella vaccine it not only damaged his sinus cavity but he also developed pneumonia & after IDK like 5 diff antibiotics didn't work the vet took a swab from way up in his nose & sent it to the lab. It turned out that he had a bad pneumonia resistant to all the antibiotics he'd been on & once we put him on Baytril & Mucinex he finally started to recover but ended up with chronic rhinitis for the rest of his life. I wish they would discontinue the use of the intranasal vaccine as once the damage is done there is no going back & just not worth it in my opinion.

He got kennel cough FROM the vaccine, not a sick dog at the vets office. It was a LIVE vaccine. If he's still choking & coughing then he IS still sick & needs more meds or he WILL end up with pneumonia if he doesn't already have it.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: Totally agree.

People really do not seem to realize just how dangerous it is to have a very young puppy w/ kennel cough. Pneumonia can be deadly. It's nothing to take lightly or "just watch and see"...:(

My dog has made the hacking noise since he was 4 months old. He is 3 and still does it almost everyday. I was told it was a sensative trachea. Little dogs like this get this. As long as it is not affecting him and he is still playing and breathing fine my vet said not to worry. Dogs with this trachea issue need to be kept at a good weight because it can make it worse
