Collapsing trachea
 
Does any one here have any experience with a collapsing trachea. My Kelli just turned 3 and we have this problem. She is on steroids but she still has episodes of the seal like barking. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated thank you

I lost my boy in April from collapsed trachea. He was only 3. Please find a vet that treats and realizes the seriousness of the issue. It is a progressive disease and it's not as common in younger dogs, so some vets dismiss it. The cough needs to be suppressed and there are some medications that help. Hycodan is the best and actually suppresses the coughing reflex in the brain. It's a narcotic though and some vets don't like to prescribe it. I believe this drug would have saved my baby. I made the fatal mistake of not getting a second opinion and trusting my vet that it wasn't serious and that he would be fine. My boy was also treated with steroids and once he was weened off, the coughing came back even worse and he did not recover from the final episode. I'm sorry for the diagnosis, but with the proper medication you pup can live a long life. Another member on this forum just lost her boy at 17 years old. His trachea collapse was successfully managed with hycodan for years.

I'm going to call my vet now and see is she will prescribe this medication

My Willow has collapsing trachea and we have good control with it by her using the Hycodan Cough Syrup.

It can be mild and never change for the rest of their lives. I had an older male who had ct and he was put on hydrocodone for several years and did great. My 9 year old girl has had mild ct for her whole life and only had to go on steroids one time when her trachea was irritated. It's not nessisarily a death sentence unless it's really extremely bad. It can definitely be treated and they can live long lives with treatment.

Thank you this does make me feel better..I've been thinking it was a death sentence for her..poor thing can't play because she starts coughing so badly...I am definitely going to check on the cough syrup. ..

Oh no so many dogs have it and live long lives. Mine took a pill form of hydrocodone. Make sure you use a harness when you have her on a leash and make sure it's one that doesn't put any pressure on the trachea (the buddy belt and choke free harness are good ones). If you use a collar for tags just make sure you don't pull on it or hook the leash to it. If you have any more questions about it don't be afraid to ask.

Our boys had the same issue.....usually when they got excited....Frisco lived to 17 years.....lost Codi Thanksgiving last year at 14....neither passed from the issue. If you are not already.....use a harness, not a leash and collar

I'm so sorry that your little one is sick. I lost my sweet Abbey many years ago to CT when she was 10 yrs old but she would have very bad episodes. Her tongue would turn a dark purple and she couldn't breathe. I wish I had know about hycodan. Make sure that your baby doesn't get overweight.

I had the same problem with mine as a puppy.. Texas A&M did surgery on her as a puppy and put a stent in her trachea. She lasted 13 years and 6 months. Good Vets and one hell of Veterinary School did my baby right. I understand what you are going through but there is hope...

I got the hydrocodone today and started today with it..I sure hope it'll help..thank you everyone for your advice
