PLEASE HELP; Moxie is sick and not getting better Hi guys, I hope all is well. I am very concerned for my little Moxie. On Friday night she started having diarrhea. On Sat and Sun, she threw up and by Sun was having stool that was all water and dark like coffee grounds, with blood. I took her to the ER vet Sunday night and she tested negative for pancreatitus and HGE. They gave her fluids and metronidazole and told me to feed her a bland diet. It's now Thursday and she still hasn't had a solid poop. There was a little bit of bright red in it. Her mood is better, she is less lethargic, not vomiting and does want food, but she is not her usual self, and still has not pooped solid. I called the vet and they said the next steps are send out a stool sample, do x-rays to rule out obstruction, stuff totaling $600 (I paid $400 for the Sun visit). To make matters worse, we are supposed to fly from SF to NYC tomorrow, and I would have to sedate her. I don't know if I should give the metronidazole more time, follow up with the ER vet, follow up with the regular vet (her regular vet is in nyc, but there is one we've seen here), fly back to nyc and see her regular vet, postpone the flight, what to do. I've been given different advice. I am concerned she would have loose bowels on the plane, but more concerned flying would stress her little body when she is already sick. She has an iron clad stomach and has never been sick like this. It is breaking my heart. |
Hi You must be worried sick I am so sorry you are going through this . How long is the plane trip . I am thinking just get home and get her into her regular Vet. Take lots of stuff to clean up if she has a nasty BM bags paper towel maybe an air freshener. Maybe call the Vet and let them know you have to fly with her and get some advice I hope things get better. |
It's impossibly scary when one of out little ones is sick and I can tell how very worried you are...Why don't you call your regular vet for advice and opinion regarding Moxie's symptons, traveling with her, etc. Take care of Moxie and yourself and will pray she's ok very, very soon! |
My little baby had similar symptoms which turned out to be colitis. She had bloody running stool with bright red blood and it it was very dark like tar almost. Per the vet, I gave her bland food and after several days it cleared up. It also took several more days for solid poop to form. At first it didn't seem like it but each day, her pooped eventually did get solid. I now know certain foods will trigger her colitis and on occasion even her regular diet would trigger it. I finally found a limited ingredient food for her and she hasn't had a bout of colitis since |

Aw I really feel for you, it's not nice when our babies are ill. Maybe give her a smaller dose of sedation. I agree with the above advice of getting her to your normal vet. I'm not an expert but I know that bright blood is better than darker blood. The darker the blood the higher up its come from. Perphaps she has small cut inside or hemorrhoids from having a upset tummy. I know it's still scary :( Hope she gets well soon xx |
Another option is doggy diapers. I took a 12 hour car ride to TN and Duchess had a bout of colitis. Doggy diapers prevented a huge mess. I also gave her a mild sedative as she hates traveling. The sedative keep her calm and the diapers kept her from messing up the car. A word of warning with the diapers, if she is pooping a lot, it could give her a diaper rash. Fortunately Duchess only messed in her diaper once. |
Sorry to hear of your plight, that is really terrible. Our poor Cody suffers with tummy issues on and off all of the time. If you are in New York, you should try and see Dr. Palma at the AMC. I would also try adding some rice to her food to firm up her stool. I hope Moxie is feeling better. Quote:

I have a chinese crested with a very sensitive tummy. He has had a few bouts of bloody diarrhea and the one thing that has helped is giving him probiotics (along with the metronidazole). It seemed to get him back to normal faster |
Oh gosh, what awful timing! I guess I'd probably have to postpone the flight if it were me...? Is that doable? If not, then I guess I'd drag her along, sedate her, and hope she makes it thru the flight w/out having to use the bathroom. This could just be a summer GI bug - lots of those going around at present. |
Moxie has been on my mind since I read your thread in "sick" forum yesterday. Praying all goes well today. |
So sorry! I can feel your fear and pain for Moxie through your words. In the last year, my Riley's vet bills came to over $10,500.00! I would willing spend twice that again to have him alive and well. My only comfort is that I gave him every possible care that the vets recommended. |

Im sorry your baby is sick, sending good thoughts for you. I would probably change my flight unless your regular vet had some suggestions. |
