Sick and confused acting boy... My boy Pogo has been acting somewhat odd lately and I have no idea what to do to make him better! I have tried every single thing that I could check on or think of even including taking him to the vet and even they were clueless as to what to do for him so I am now very scared!!! Pogo was diagnosed with liver shunt a while back and we have been maintaining him pretty well with a good diet and meds and for the most part he has been acting like a puppy lately but in the past few days he has started behaving oddly consisting of constant persistent licking of me, biting me (but he doesn't seem to realize he does any of these things or how hard he does them) not responding when I talk to him or call his name, accidentally running or bumping into walls or steps like he is disoriented, climbing into or on things all confused that he would never go into or onto before, following me everywhere nonstop as though I were going to leave him even though I pretty much take him everywhere I go already... But most of all he has a glazed over look of confusion on his face and in his eyes and I almost feel like I am losing some part of him as time passes because he isn't getting any better! He eats and drinks well and doesn't have dis colored gums or tongue so I know he has been ok as far as his blood sugar and stuff so this part is all new for me! I am used to all the other worst case scenarios with him but this really freaks me out because with the other stuff I always knew how to make him better but with this I honestly don't know what to do or what is wrong with him... So I decided to come on here with the hopes that someone... Anyone might just recognize something about what is happening to him and they might be able to offer up some ideas or suggestions to help me save my sweet baby boy! Please if you know of anything or have any ideas I beg you to try... We really need help here! Thank you! 😭 |
If he has been Dx'd with a Liver Shunt and no surgery was done, and you have only been maintaining with diet and med's, now is the time for a re-check as the symptoms you describe point to the Shunt problem acting up and it's very possible the toxins are causing this. Prayers for your baby. |
True... I did take him to the vet today and they didn't feel like he was acting abnormal enough to require them to perform the blood work or retest him for the shunt but then they frustrate me greatly there! They said he spears too anxioand they were upset with me for deciding not to medicate him for anxiety but I don't want him acting like a zombie on top of how he is already acting now...!!! 😭😢😞 |
I can say though that I have noticed in the past that when his shunt acted up he lost any desire to eat or drink anything and lately that is not the case... If anything he is eating better than normal now... It is all of the other things that are not normal for him! 😢 |

This is not anxiety you are describing. I hope you can get answer for your baby. You as the owner have a right to get the treatment you need, and I think he needs to have the Blood work re-tested, in fact if this was me I would demand it be done. |

I think those symptoms/behaviors sound serious and are worth a minimum of bloodwork. You see him all day everyday and know his personality and behavior- the dr should value your knowledge and your reporting and respond accordingly. I would insist on bloodwork. |
I do understand this however where my vet and I differ on things here is that they refused to hear me in how this is not his normal attitude and therefore I don't see any futher reasons to medicate him or treat him for anxiety when this is only just happening during the last 2 days! I think it is something else and I wanted them to take that more seriously and not just dismiss me saying he just has anxiety issues and that they refused to treat him there unless I decided to medicate him for anxiety! I believe it is so much worse than that! He face presses me now when he comes close to me or even tries to kiss me like he no longer seems to remember how to lick me anymore... He has started to bob his head and body and acts somewhat drunk and staggers when he stands... (Not that my dog drinks mind you but that is my best description for his clumsy woozy unresponsive attitude now!!!) I am so scared and I have tried everything I can think of to do and I don't know where to go or what is left to do because there is nowhere left here I can turn to anymore so I am left begging people for ideas online now... I just know he is more to me than a pet!!! He is my baby and my tiny precious little life and I have fought so hard to keep him here and I'm not about to stop trying any time soon! He is a small but strong willed little guy and I pray for some kind of a miracle right now! |

I wish that we had the luxury of other great options around here but unfortunately for us the selections are few and far between here! Where I live there are only a few vets anywhere near here and none are really that great anymore sadly! Two of the local bets are owned by the same company who killed my family's Yorkie and nearly killed one of their others during a teeth cleaning with overdose of anesthesia so we don't trust them at all! The other option a vet that claims to show you all charges that you are supposed to have to pay upfront then sneaks huge amounts (as in the top hundreds to thousands or more) of unknown charges in after they treat your babies but flat out refuse to explain why... So this last vet was our last hope here... Sadly! |
How was your baby diagnosed with a liver shunt ? & Who diagnosed the liver shunt ? |
These are all signs of worsening issues w/ the liver shunt. Find another vet, period. Even IF you have to drive further. You need to do this ASAP. |
Update... Pogo is back at his original vet where he was diagnosed. You asked how he had been previously diagnoased... He had the bile acid test done and urine and other blood work tests and all showed up with the liver shunt... But he was rushed in to the emergency vet yesterday because he collapsed from dehydration and confusion and they kept him until 5pm in the evening yesterday but since no one stayed there at night they had me take him home due to his risks of seizures and the fact that they wanted someone to be with him however he went right back there first thing this morning at 8am and is still there right now. He is doing pretty well and they say he should make a full recovery but they want him on more meds for the rest of his life and a more specialized diet they think will help him so they want me to meet with an animal nutritionist to get better advice about foods that might help him better than they could... I feel so blessed that he isn't acting or feeling like he was the last few days though because that was so scary and I felt so helpless and it was so hard seeing my poor sweet baby like that! He means the world to me and I would do anything to make him better! Thank you all for being here for me too! That means so much to me too! 🐾💚💛 |
Is there a reason he hasn't had the surgery to repair the shunt?? Many dog's have had this surgery and go on to live a long life. I hope he is doing better. |
