My Rocky had his nuts chopped off and 8 teeth pulled on Aug 31st. He came home and scarfed down a full bowel off food, then puked an hour later. He was so hungry I couldn't just let him have a little. I slept with him down stairs that night and he ended up puking two more times through out the night. Even though I asked the vet to give him anti-nausea medicine which he did. I think the biggest thing that bothered him was the E-Collar. But after 24hrs he's used to it. It's really hard keeping him from jumping up and down the couch, but since the e-collar is on all the time he's not licking his incision and it looks great so now after a few days I am not as worried about him jumping and having the incision bust open. I was surprised how quickly these guys recover. Give it 24hrs and your dog will be as good as new.

Thanks, he is doing much better and eating! Has yours stopped puking? Wow, didn't know having the incision burst open was a possibility! Max has been jumping some, but I am trying to do a better job keeping him still. How long should I keep an eye out for the licking?

My vet told me to be careful with him jumping and running because the incision could split open. I'm sure every day that goes by and the incision doesn't split open the risk of it splitting gets smaller and smaller. Keeping the incision dry not only prevents infection but also keeps the incision from splitting, also keeping him from licking the incision also prevents him from pulling out the sutures. I would say keep him from licking until the sutures come out. My vet said he will take out the sutures in 2 weeks. These are going to be the longest two weeks ever but my Rocky seems to be doing great and the only thing bothering him is the e-collar which a few extra treats seem to be a good trade off. I would say keep his e-collar on the whole time so that he can get used to it. It's much better to keep the e-collar on for the two weeks rather having him get an infection be on antibiotics or worse need more surgery to drain an abscess.

Well it's true. I'm not very happy we had to do this. But we want him to be able to go to doggie parks and doggie daycare and for that he needed the surgery. Otherwise I don't think I would have done it. My dad, Rocky's grandfather still doesn't understand why it had to be done. It was a very sad day in our family.

We don't have to go back to get the sutures out. Is there more than one way to neuter a dog? His weren't chopped off, they are still there! I should have maybe spent more time researching the actual surgery after making the decision to do it.

Maybe they used disolvable sutures? I'm no vet but I guess they could have snipped the seminal vesicle or something? I think there's a minimally invasive way of doing it? It it's done to just prevent the guys from getting the gals pregnant, but they still get access to all the hormones. We did it because the doggie daycare and the city required it for Rocky to be able to play with other dogs in doggie parks and for that reason the testicles should be removed to decrease the amount of testosterone and decrease aggressive behavior. Also I know that some vets will place prosthetic testicles in the scrotum so that the dog doesn't feel like it lost its manhood or it's probably more for the parents. Our vet used Vicryl sutures, they're stronger and don't dissolve on their own. If I were you I'd call your vet and find out exactly what they did. And let us know. I'm very interested to find out if there were other options for my future dogs.

Yes, I will definitely have to call because I'm curious too. I also want mine to be able to go to dog parks and day cares.That's by no means to the sole reason for me, but it was a huge perk.

Sometimes it just looks like they are still there. :) They make a small incision in front of the scrotal sac....the sac remains intact and sometimes there is a bit of swelling to make it appear like they are still there. He probably has the dissolvable sutures.

I didn't mean to make light of your feelings....It was just that the wording hit me as a bit humorous. As you can see by my avatar, I am not always completely normal. :D :p

:thumbup: My Max had what looked like a wrinkly sac of skin for awhile, dissolvable sutures. I think it took months or maybe a year to go away completely. It was a little crusty and oozy the first couple weeks and I was concerned that he had torn it open jumping.

Our breeder had Teddy done for us and when we picked him up 3 weeks later, Teddy didn't have any sign of the surgery. I think Teddy's was done a little 'neater' by his surgeon.

I am so accustomed to my neutered boys that when I went to a Yorkie show and one of the exhibitors turned her boy over for a belly rub, I almost burst out laughing at the big balls. LOL :D

I meant the wrinkly skin took a long time to go away, not the sutures. We don't go to that vet anymore for many reasons.
