How to get him to go - constipated! My doggie has been ill - they suspected pancreatitis or just some viral stomach upset. He's been on antibiotics, tramadol and Pepcid since Monday. I've dialed it back with the tramadol only giving it once a day versus twice a day due to constipation. We had not too much food intake over the weekend and even less water (although vet gave him hydration). Finally got him to eat a little more with some boiled chicken and yesterday a little chicken baby food mixed in with his kibble. He had a very large bowel movement on Monday post vet (his reveal exam may have helped). He has since not had a bowel movement. I gave him pumpkin purée tonight with his meds - 2 tsps. He's an 11 pound 7 year old Yorkie. Any recommendations on getting him to go? When is it an issue had he hasn't had a bowel movement? I know the tramadol causes constipation. Prior to the medicine he was having very regular bowel movements. |
Not eating much, and the chicken will make for fewer stools. Decreased activity will also slow things down. I wouldn't be really concerned about constipation unless his stomach is distended and he shows signs of distress. I know that might be difficult to differentiate since he has tummy problems. It is not that unusual though to go a day or two, sometimes a little longer without a bowel movement under such circumstances. When my Teddy had a bout of bad diarrhea and was on a chicken and rice diet, he didn't have another poop for over 48 hours. |
Thanks Maximo! He isn't straining or even trying to go. He actually seems more comfortable today and yesterday atleast activity wise than on Monday when he was quite ill. His water intake until yesterday evening was pretty low. He hasn't had a ton to eat so I'm not super super concerned but tomorrow will be 3 days without a bowel movement. I'm hoping he goes in the morning! Will try some more pumpkin purée, which he loved! |
Take a poop My best thing I have found is canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) I give my Yorkie 1 heaping tsp daily with a little deli turkey meat as a treat. It is good for him and no more constipation. I put tsp of pumpkin on wax paper and freeze for easy use daily. No waste. |
I've been doing the pumpkin purée for 24 hours and still nothing. I'm going to take him for a longggg walk later to see if we can get things going. He doesn't seem uncomfortable but I can't imagine it's normal for him not to have a bowel movement for 3.5 days! |
What does your vet think? Sometimes an enema is needed when its severe. |
I called the vet and she said if he doesn't go by tomorrow morning that he needs to be seen. He isn't attempting to go, there's no straining. He's eating, not his normal quantity, but he's eating. I'm giving him 1 teaspoon of pumpkin purée 2x a day. She suggested a long walk...see if he will eat some more. She said if he's been sick and hasn't been eating well he might have much to pass. I know the Pepcid, antibiotics and tramadol might cause him to be constipated. This would be 3x at the vet in 2 weeks. His X-ray came back fine along with his bloodwork. He had a very very large poop on Monday around 11am but nothing since. Hoping he will go later. |
I'm hoping he produces tonight to ease your mind. If he is still feeling a little down from tummy problems, don't push the walking too much. You can also try giving him a bottom wash. Sometimes soaking a little in warm water will help. With my Teddy, I can gently clean his backend with a cotton ball and that will usually stimulate him to go. If your baby likes car rides, a ride might produce the excitement that sometimes stimulates the urge to go. If he doesn't produce by tomorrow, I would follow your vet's recommendation to bring him in for another check. |
I'm sure a good walk will get him going. Good luck 💩 |
My little fella hasn't gone yet. He's developed quite the appetite which is good considering he's barely had half of his normal about of food all week. He was quite active today, drank lots of water. Hoping tomorrow morning he goes! Thanks for all the recommendations. Fingers crossed we don't have to make a trip to the vet. |

He went!!! thank goodness. |
Poop! Lol I have never been so happy to see someone "gave a sh-t". What a riot. Bet he feels better. Keep up the pumpkin regime for fiber. Deli turkey has calming effect also. Glad you're furbaby did his thing. |
I know isn't it crazy? 4.5 days is a long time though so if he didn't go something was definitely going on. Hoping he's on the mend. It's been a long 2 weeks for my little Toby. Thanks for all the recommendations and suggestions! This forum really is awesome! |
