Mast Cell Tumor My 5 year old yorkie Penelope, had a lump appear on her back side near her tail 2 weeks ago. Vet tested the fluid, detected small amount of mast cell, sent us home with Benadryl 1/2 a 25 mg pill twice a day. Took her in yesterday for check up because it did get bigger after testing and now has gone down. Vet is referring us to Oncologist at UC Davis, CA. I am told this is uncommon for yorkies especially so young, anyone else dealt with this? |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I'm sorry that Penelope had this lump and diagnosis. I never knew that Benadryl would be prescribed for such a thing, but then I read this article explaining mast cells and histamines. Why Benadryl For Mast Cell Tumors? - Dog Cancer Blog There are some interesting comments on the article from people going through this with their dogs. Some of the comments may be helpful to you. Sounds like meeting with the oncologist first is the right plan of action. Best wishes for Penelope. Keep us updated. |
I think it is great your vet referred you to UC Davis. I would definitely go to a specialist for something like this. I knew someone whose pup had a mast cell tumor on his leg. It was caught early and was surgically removed and he was fine. Please keep us posted...we can all learn from each other's experiences. I personally have not dealt with a mast cell tumor in any of my pups. Welcome to YT! :) Prayers for Penelope...pretty name! :) |
Best of luck through this difficult time. Please keep us up dated. |
Sorry no experience here but I hope you keep us updated and best wishes for a full recovery! Welcome to YT from Arizona. |
