50mg Tramadol for 5 pound Yorkie?? Hi, Hopefully I have this in the right "room" now:) Here is a link to the other posting with more detail if needed. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...nput-asap.html Charlie, 12 yr old yorkie, was diagnosed today with Pancreatitis. I have him home now and he is kind of sleeping(was given IV pain meds with fluids and something to coat the stomach). My question is I just looked at the RX bottle for the Tramadol that he is to start in the morning and it says to give him 1 50mg tablet every 12 hours. I didn't notice the dosage while at the vet and I can't call them now until morning. Does that seem extremely high to anyone else? From what I am reading that seems like 40mg to much at the highest dose. Again, he doesn't need it til morning and I can check with the vet but that dosage seems dangerous for a 5 pound dog. Thanks for any input. (part of my problem is this is an unknown vet clinic to me since mine was closed) |
Now I'm very concerned after seeing this video. This yorkie is the same weight as my Charlie. I even ran the "pill identifier" on the pills to verify they are 50mg pills and they are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQ7LlrkqNvE Has anyone heard that 50mg is ok for 5 pounds? |

"For pain relief, the usual dose in dogs is 0.45-1.8mg per pound of pet's weight given by mouth every 8-12 hours. For treating chronic cancer pain in dogs, the usual dose is 0.45-1.8mg per pound of pet's weight given by mouth every 6 hours. The usual dose for cats for chronic pain is 1.8mg per pound of pet's weight given by mouth twice a day." |
For a 5 lb dog, the high dose would be 9mg. I would def check w/ the vet! Good job double checking your meds. |
Thank you for the replies:) I took Charlie in to his regular vet this morning and they confirmed that Charlie was prescribed a lethal dose of Tramadol. I am so thankful I am so paranoid(doesn't seem so paranoid now) about any type of drugs or supplements for Charlie that I didn't give him what was prescribed. I feel horrible for folks who trust their Drs/Vets and don't have very much health/care knowledge about dogs. You should be able to trust the Vets know what they are doing but clearly in this case a HUGE mistake was made. I would like to THANK this forum for helping me with Charlie and just having a place I feel I can connect with others that have Yorkie experience. When in a crisis it's nice to have that comfort. So...THANK YOU ALL:) |
I'm so glad you checked in with your regular vet and clarified the correct dosage! Very scary. I had a Walgreens put my human meds in the wrong bottles once, so I am extra paranoid. Luckily I already knew what the meds looked like, otherwise I would have overdosed on one. Although I love our vet, I always research new meds before giving them to the pups. Sending best wishes for Charlie. I hope he is doing better this evening. |

I hope you called that other vet and reported to them that they almost killed your dog . Save |
Im so glad you looked at the bottle that would of been horrible |
Meds I just had this happen ,my dogs have kidney disease and the vet gave me something that she said was safe for kidney disease ,I always look it up first and when I did I found it was NOT safe for kidney disease ,I call them back and they said yes it was a mistake -unbelievable |
Wow. I am glad you caught that. That could have been tragic. I just hurt my knee and I am on the wrong side of 250 pounds and they gave me 50mg of tramadol. I will only take them at night because they make me groggy at work. I shutter to even imagine what it would have done to your furbaby. |

Thank goodness you checked out that dosage! Good job there!! I actually had that happen once...they had given one of my foster pups ten times the dosage allowed of a pretty heavy duty medication for collapsed trachea. It was a error with a decimal. Thankfully I caught it....the next morning I called and the vet, who was a specialist, pretty much told me I didn't know what I was talking about. I hung up on her and went straight to my vet and showed her the bottle...she was shocked. I told her to call her friend (the specialist) and let her know I was right. They then said to come back and they would replace it. I never went back to that place. I now go to a wonderful specialty hospital in Houston when I need a specialist. Anyone can make a mistake and it is up to us, the consumers, to double check all meds for ourselves and our pups! I would not have had a problem with that place IF they had simply treated me with respect and listened...but to just act like I was crazy? Don't think so. |
