IVDD Diagnosis My 6 y/o rescue is suspected to have a mild case of IVDD. He's presented with neck and/or back pain on 2 separate occasions. The vet did an x-ray and noticed narrowed disc space in 2 locations, which is usually evidence of a bulging or herniated disc. No neurological signs yet. Will get an MRI to confirm. Has anyone had experience with this disorder? |
Yes, our Wylie has it. He was diagnosed about 4 yrs ago and luckily during that time, he's only had 3 flare ups. For those, we give prednisone and a muscle relaxant x 5 days...and it goes away quickly. Wylie is 12, btw. |
Thank you for your reply. Nigel is on Gabapentin for pain until he gets the MRI and he's back to his old self. Did you have to limit Wylie's activity in any way? Nigel is a jumper and a climber, and we're working on limiting him in those respects. He loves to take walks but I'm afraid to take him for fear of exacerbating the issue. |

I would not stop the walks at all, unless the vet advises this. Inactivity in dogs is just so detrimental. |
my Bailey... he is a shin tuz ... had this about three years past. It was very scary and we thought we were going to have to have surgery. We did take him to a neurologist for evaluation.. we did not do the MRI because he showed improvement with the steroids and pain killers. He has had one flare up.. but minor. I did have to restrict his activity. He was not allowed to use our stairs... jump off the bed or couch. I did not walk him for several weeks... had him on crate (big play pen) when we were not at home. I had to sleep down stairs with him for a few weeks. He is fine now I wish you happy recovery for your fur baby!! |
