copperhead warning, East Texas area Friends, While visiting family our beloved 9 year old female Yorkie (~4 lbs) was bitten on the ear by a large copperhead snake. We brought her to the emergency vet within 20 minutes but she steadily declined over 2 days and we had to put her to sleep today at the advice of two very experienced vets. So please keep a careful eye out in your yards as the snakes are getting active. While I was at the vet (several trips over the past 2 days) there were many other cases of snake bites being treated so I just wanted to pass along the cautionary note. Be safe! Joe |
So sorry for your loss. It seems that no matter how careful we are when we have our babies out for a walk (always on a leash) that we still have to be watchful and not complacent about our surroundings. Thanks for the warning. I know how great a loss this is for you. Just remember how happy you made your little one for 9 years. |
So very sorry for your loss, how tragic for you, and so considerate of you to pass this heads up to us at this very painful time. Hugs to you and your family. |
I am so sorry for your loss. |
I am so sorry for your loss. It is so shocking and sad to lose a beloved pup like that..... everything changes in an instant. We don't have snakes in Hawaii, but I lost my Meika 2 years ago to an encounter with a poisonous toad. She died within an hour, in my arms on the way to the vet. I hope you find a new pup to bring joy to your life again. |
I am very sorry for your heartbreaking loss. :( Thank you for the reminder to be on the lookout. Copperheads, as you know, are a problem here in Virginia. |
Thanks for the kind words and well wishes. This has been a tough day for us and I know we've got more ahead. I wanted to include these pictures in the thread for identification and clarity. The snake on the left is the one which killed Xapa. I found the second one when I went back to re-check the area after we got home from the vet. These snakes have excellent camouflage and are very difficult to spot. snakes c_zpscakvmer7.jpg Photo by jp_over | Photobucket This is the area immediately behind our swing where the first snake was located at the time of the bite. If Xapa had not gone back there either my wife or I might have been bitten as it was headed our way. We're very thankful that our daughter was not out as she is usually running around the area. yard behind swing snakes_c_zpsgm3fufzp.jpg Photo by jp_over | Photobucket I've been working to clear any possible snake habitat areas (brush piles, leaf piles, stacked / old wood, etc.) but it's slow going. Not sure why my pictures are showing as links, might be my low post count doesn't have picture posting privileges yet. |
Those are a couple of big Copperheads. :( I am so sorry for your family's loss of beautiful Xapa. Picture posting: Photobucket and all external picture hosts will always show as links in this forum.
