hernia Hi everyone, our baby girl has a hernia that just decided to show up. we took her to the ER where she had xrays and from the xrays that vet mentioned it looked like just fatty tissue and to just "leave it".. we felt sort of weird with her answer so we took her to see another vet, which stated we should get it fixed asap. Now I am sort of torn what to do.. She seems fine, it isn't hurting her, and she doesn't seem to be in pain or anything. I dont want to put her through the surgery if its unnecessary. she has been through a lot in her life and the thought of putting her through a surgery bothers me.. (obv if it were a life or death situation it would be different).. what are your opinions? thank you |
Did either of the vets say which kind of hernia it is? Umbilical or inguinal? Is it protruding? One of my friend's dogs had hernia surgery recently. He is doing really well. I will ask her for more details. Maybe she will post here. Here is an article on hernias: Inguinal, Umbilical and Diaphragmatic Hernias in Dogs |
Yes, they said it was an umbilical hernia. We have not had her since she was a puppy, and she seems to have a scar in the same area, so she could have had the surgery previously as a puppy.. and it does stick out like a little ball under the skin :( |

Tough decision about whether or not to go ahead and repair it. Here is an older Yorkie Talk thread to read: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...l-hernias.html How old is your is baby girl? |
she has a scar a little lower from her spaying surgery. She is 4 years old. She is starting to trust us finally and feel comfortable with me, I just feel terrible putting her thru it if its unnecessary. |
I understand your hesitation. I'm going to private message you with the email address of my friend whose adult boy dog recently had hernia surgery. She said she would be happy to share her experience and info with you. |
Years ago I had a pup that developed a small umbilical hernia after she had a bout of constipation. It was a small hernia about the size of a grape but it was really hard. I think her straining to potty caused it. I rushed her to the vet and he did surgery immediately but it turned out that it was only fatty tissue that was protruding. She did just fine after the surgery. I think you would have better peace of mind if you had it fixed, not knowing for sure if it is a real hernia or just fatty tissue. Please keep us posted on how she does. |
Hi everyone thank you for all your stories and suggestions. She is having her surgery today and I am a nervous wreck. please say prayers for my little girl <3 |

I am praying for your baby for all to go smoothly today. Looking forward to hearing she is back home with you. |
A little birdie (our mutual email friend) told me that surgery went well today. I hope your baby girl was able to come home tonight and that she is resting comfortably with you. |
Hi everyone - Sorry for the late update, surgery went well! she was SO happy to see me when I picked her up. She ate a little and drank once we got home. She is a little sleepy as expected but she seems "normal" so far. Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement and support. I was so nervous and you helped put me at ease. |
