Whats wrong?! Arched back diarrhea I was in new york city all yesterday and got home late.. I'd run out of Dave's normal ID food that he eats(he sometimes eats people food and other stuff.. so this isn't the first time he's had something else), so i went to a gas station store and bought him a thingie of Little Cesears filet minion flavored food... Around 4am I woke up, and I went out to the living room where Dave asleep in his playpen.. I noticed he was sleeping not he flood instead of in his bed with his toys like he normally does. I rubbed his tummy a bit, and then picked him up and placed him in his bed and turned the lights out. Within 5 minutes I started hearing these loud noises coming from the living room.. I go out to see Dave running around his pen when his back arched, making awful noises, and having diarrhea.. I gave him a ton of water and went back to bed, I also googled little casears and found a bunch of amazon reviews that said it made their dog very sick, etc but that it improved with different food... When I got up this morning, he was doing the same thing with his back arched (no crying now).. I went and got him some bread and chicken, that he ate for lunch. And then I gave him some turkey for dinner.. He still seems to be in pain. He's still running around back arched... Should I take him to the ER? I just don't want to take him to the emergency vet if it's only constipation.. |
I would definitely go to ER. Never heard of arched back with diarrhea. Did he maybe have a fall in his playpen. Sounds like he is very uncomfortable. Please update when you find out what's going on. |

I would be at the vet.....he seems as if he is in pain....my cousin feeds Cesars to her dogs for years and has never had any bad events....possibly, you got ahold of a bad serving from the gas station....but I wouldnt wait until Monday to get him in to the vet...he is in pain, that needs to be addressed. |
I took him to the ER right after I posted this.. They admitted him for observation & IV's.. :( I'm going to go back at 2am to see him, and hopefully bring him home. I've got a live radio show in 30mins, so I'm going back as soon as it's done. |
Any time you have symptoms like that, get to the ER! I am glad someone was here to see this post and advise you. These little ones can dehydrate very quickly from vomiting and/or diarrhea ; and they can die!. The arching of his back is an indication of stomach pain. Often it is pancreatitis. Hope he is doing better. Please keep us posted. |
Hoping he is ok... |
I went back to see Dave around 2am (my radio show got over at 1).. They're saying he may have liver shunts, or meningitis(this seems unlikely), but they won't know whats wrong with him until they do blood work in the morning. He seemed alert to me.. But they have him on medication and an IV. I feel so bad for my poor little boy. His tummy is definitely very bloated. |

Aww poor baby boy...he is precious. Praying for him and for you... |
Poor Dave! Praying for your beautiful boy and you. |
The hospital called me this morning saying he was fine and that I could pick him up.. But that the liver shunt test results wouldn't be back until tomorrow...But that he was acting fine, not in any pain (other than diaper rash), etc.. I went to go get him, and when the doctor came in the room, she said he had had a very violent seizure about 30 minutes prior. So poor little Dave is now having to stay over another night so he can see a neurologist tomorrow. :( |
Praying so hard for your baby boy....please, keep us updated....know tons of prayers are going up for him..... |
So very sorry to hear this. I know your hopes were high. Hopefully the neurologist can give you some answers. 🙏🙏🙏 |
I too thought pancreatitis too when I read your first post. Arched back is stomach pain. Pancreatitis is a very serious and painful condition. I am now shocked that dogs usually can go home same day or next day after having pancreatitis. The seizure is scary though. I think seizure can happen with liver shunts. Hoping he pulls through. |
sending prayers for your baby |
Sorry for not updating.. So Dave came home monday afternoon..His blood tests were all good.. No liver shunt.. The neurologist said he's not epileptic and he may not have had a seizure; that the other doctors description of what she told us was a grand mal seizure, actually was probably just him being hyper and spazzing out... I was relieved but also really upset about this.. The kicker was when I checked him out of the hospital, he was still arching his back.. The reason I took him there in the first place. I took him to his regular vet later Monday afternoon. And she was baffled by the back arching and rubbing.. She did put a numbing agent on his butt (because he had really bad diaper rash from the diarrhea).. By Tuesday morning Dave was 100% back to normal. So i'm thinking the damn Cesars dog food was culprit.. DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG CESARS.. Thanks to Cesars poor little Dave had a $3000 2night hospital stay, and was given heavy duty medication(the seizure meds, and they also gave him a morphine like opiate for pain saturday night). |
Different dog food affects dogs differently....I dont feed Cesars but my cousin does and has for many years, with no problems. What some dogs are not able to tolerate, others do just fine on! I am glad you got your issue solved, unfortunately it was so expensive! I am not sure that the dog food is the problem you were having with your baby..... |
Willie had a terrible reaction after I tried to switch him to a new food. I learned my lesson the hard way also. Sorry about the 3000, but relieved he will be ok. |
Happy to hear Dave is doing better!! :) |
