Possible Sting or insect bite or her patella Yesterday we let Kiki out to play like most afternoons. After 30 minutes or so she yelped out & seemed to hold her right hind leg up. She took a brief pause & went back to playing in the yard. She was a few feet away & yelped out again. This time she took off to the house. I checked on her and couldn't see anything. We rested in the house fit about an hour before leaving to visit a neighbor. She was standing in the floor board this time. She yelped and jumped in my lap. I took her back home; where she took off & hid under the bed until my husband came home. No sooner than she came out she was jumping around in pain like something was biting her or possibly her knee hurt to move? This time she hid under the bed for over an hour. I checked her feet throughly; tried moving her knees & couldn't find what is bothering her. 3 am we are back with the same problem she got up for a drink. She ran so fast under the bed I have a hard time thinking it is her patella acting up again. I don't know what to do for her. |
How is she now? ANYtime you even suspect a sting (which always releases venom) - give Benadryl ASAP, no matter what. You always want to err on the safe side when it comes to stings. You should always have Benadryl in your doggie ER kit, already dosed and ready to give. The regular dose for it 1-2mg per pound, but for stings - DO give the 2mg/pound. If they won't take the cut up pill form, that's when you break out your liquid Benadryl and give that instead. There is a thread in this section about a doggie ER kit, if you need to make one. |
She finally got back in bed with us about 5 a.m. She is still sleeping now. I didn't give her a Benadryl because she had already taken her allergy pill and I didn't know if it was safe to mix them. |
Just got home from work she still isn't any better. Today instead of running under the bed and she running to me. The vet told me to give her benadryl and if she wasn't any better to bring her in. It is like she is afraid to walk and left alone she is just shaking. |

You need to take her to a vet! You said you didn't see anything, so I am not clear on why you are thinking insect bite. You mentioned her patella and used the word again...leading me to think maybe she does have a knee issue. She should be examined ... it could be a torn cruciate ligament. Also, I would be more inclined to think insect bite on a foot...not a knee. |
We are at the vet now. We should know something soon. To be clear I didn't think she was bitten on the knee. I'm not sure where her pain came from but she was standing still both times she yelped out. I haven't been in contact with her doctor since it happened also. We should know something soon. |

Well we really don't know much more than before; but she is physically ok. We are leaning toward it is her trick knee. Doc said it has gotten worse since her check up in March. She gave her Loxicom taken once a day and started her on Phycox once a day. Hopefully the anxiety about being on the floor and walking will get better over the weekend. I'm thinking I'm going to get her a thunder shirt too. |
Is she using this leg? Sounds like luxating patella ... If it is getting worse, you might want to consider the opinion of a board certified ortho surgeon. That does not necessarily mean you must have surgery done, but always good to get another opinion. Yes is she using it to a minimum and yes that is what she has. She didn't think it was time for surgery yet. |

She is 4. We've know about this problem since she was 1 but hasn't given us any trouble since. Her vet is AAHA accredited and that is about the best we have to offer without going to Memphis or Nashville around here. |
I checked your link and I didn't find anything within 500 miles of here. |
How about the University of Tennessee, Knoxville |
I don't know why it didn't show up but it is about 6 hrs away. I don't know if we are ready to cross that bridge. But she did walk up stairs to get in her bed up in the game room. It is a positive she that she decided to get up. But concerns me that she chose to go where she knew she would be by herself. We have a verbal follow up Monday and standing appointment Wednesday just in case we need it. |
Yes, UT is a great choice! If this started at the age of 1, she probably should have had surgery. The surgeon I use always recommends it for the young ones. The reason is that when the knee pops in and out it wears on the ligament and they can end up with a tear. If the knee is repaired you cut down the chances of that happening. She is still young and if it is bothering her now, it might be best to get it repaired. They usually don't with older pups because they can repair the knee and then the pup might tear the ligament anyway since it has had years of wear on it from the unstable knee. Then, your pup has to have yet another surgery...hard on them and hard on the pocketbook. The following link is the surgery link at UT...it says Cardiology, but it is not cardo. Cardiology |
Sorry I haven't updated. Since Friday the 6th Kiki has went even more down hill. She started throwing up on Monday and started eating less. She hadn't thrown up much the few times she did but it was obvious it was a problem. Back to the vet we went on Wednesday morning. They took her off the pain med and did a full work up on her blood. Everything looked great except she was bordering on dehydrated. They gave her fluid under her skin. As well as an acid reducer and stomach coater. By Friday still no improvement the vet added amoxicillin as well as changed her diet. She is on digestive care i/d. She has eaten it twice on her own. Other than that I'm making soup and giving it to her by syringe. It isn't ideal but got to do what we got to do. She did drink water on her own yesterday. She still doesn't want to leave the bedroom. I think it is anxiety because she did come out last night to see my friend. But she locked up once she got into the kitchen and was stuck. |
I really think it is time to get her to a specialist. Way too much going on. I would honestly start out with internal medicine and go from there..... |
Well we had a very successful lunch at my mom's. We debated on taking her or not even though it is part of her normal Sunday routine. But we decided if it wasn't working we would just take her back home. As soon as I let her out of the truck she hurried into the house tail wagging. She ran in and greeted everyone. She did lay in a dog bed in the kitchen until lunch was served. She ate a very good lunch of boiled chicken. She has acted better today than she has in over a week. |
