Kennel cough We just got a 10 week old male Yorkie we named Louie. When we first meet the breeder he said it was the first time the dog was ever outside because they don't take their dogs outside until they've had three rounds of shots, ok whatever. So on the way home he did a cough one time didn't think anything of it. He met our golden retrieve and they played all went well. Then we took him to a relatives house and he was outside in the grass. It was a cold damp day and after her went potty and I took him in he started coughing it sounded like a cat coughing up a hairball, cough cough gag. He did this for about 2 hrs then stopped for 6 hr then did it through the night. The next day he did it maybe once, but he does it a lot at night. He went to the vet yesterday the vet rubbed his trachea and said usually dogs with kennel cough gag and react when you touch their tracheas. He of course didn't make a single sound at the vet. He said he didn't think it was and was just the exposure to cool air and dampness for the first time, he's eating drinking good. And playing, im more worried about my golden retriever just bc he's a little older. Any advice thanks |
I would just watch him for progression. First time outside could be the cause. These babies have to gradually get used to their surroundings. For now just take him for potty. Most definitely get him to vet if for no reason he starts again. Mine is a little over a year old. Sometimes he does this after drinking or playing outside. I think outside is because when we play ball he gets grass in his mouth. |
If he has another coughing fit, video it w/ your phone so can later show the vet what it looks and sounds like. A puppy w/ kennel cough can VERY EASILY progress to serious pneumonia, so keep a very close eye on this. |
Did the breeder give him a Bordatella vaccine ? Also the breeder was rite about NoT taking them out without being FULLY vaccinated. You should NoT be taking your puppy anywhere except your vets office until he/she is FULLY vaccinated & if you choose to do so then you are putting your puppy in danger of catching something. |
Ok I must be very new at this then... So all puppies shouldn't go outside or socialize with other animals until 12 weeks old? Bc that's when his third thing of shots is due he's only had the first two |
usually I think it is 16 weeks for a typical yorkie vax schedule. hth |
How is his cough. Is it getting any better? |
