GI problems My 5 1/2 month old puppy has had digestion problems for most of his little life and I'm just wondering if anybody else has/is gone/going through this? If so, how did you get it straightened out? |
What kind of problems is he having? |
What do you mean, digestion problems...? |
He is constipated often. Most antibiotics make him sick and he doesn't ever get really excited over food, except mine(which he does not get). I guess it's mostly the constipation though. He is on Orijen puppy kibble. |

If he's constipated, he might not be drinking enough water. A daily small spoon of canned 100% pure pumpkin would help with that - it has high water content and it helps with both constipation and diarrhea. *you can freeze the canned pumpkin in an ice tray and keep it in the freezer so it lasts longer. |
I agree that he may not be getting enough water. Try adding a little Apple Cider Vinegar to his diet. I put a 1/2 a cap full on my dogs food each feeding & they love it. I have a couple who suffer from digestive issues as well but since adding the Cider Vinegar they have totally turned around in that area. Some people put it rite into the water bowl & that may entice your pup to drink more as well. Be sure it's Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar & shake it well before each use. |
I have tried pumpkin and he won't touch it. He's a very finnicky eater. I will try the apple cider vinegar. Thank you all for your advice! He was on antibiotics because he has crystals in his urine. That has gotten much better(though not gone) so he's not on them anymore. We had some blood tests ran to check his liver function. I will get the results back on Monday. |
I'll be Praying no liver shunt. |
Sending positive thoughts that your baby gets better soon!:aimeeyork |
Thank you for your prayers! The vet is so concerned about what she saw in his blood work that she called me yesterday instead of waiting until Monday. He is having an ultrasound on Tuesday so please keep praying. I wish now that I had purchased pet insurance. |
Sounds like you have a good vet - being compassionate and caring. Fingers, and toes, crossed that she gets to the bottom of why your precious furrbaby is unwell. Sending out hugs to you, as I can well imagine that you are terribly worried. |
Thank you! Yeah I think she's a good vet. I just hope whatever it is, we can get to the bottom of it and yes I'm EXTREMELY worried about my little guy!!! |
Yes I'm going through it with my 4 year old. And no I haven't gotten it resolved. Mine is the exact opposite tho, he has the diarrhea and is always hungry for food. He's on antibiotics and Royal Canin for GI prescription canned food but that usually firms their poop up so I don't know if that would be good for your little one. I really have no advice but to tell you that I understand your worry and hope and pray our furbabies are healed. |
How long has your baby had this problem? What does your vet say? |
Any update on this baby ? |
Lillimae Thank you for asking! He had an ultrasound on Tuesday and I am anxiously waiting on the vet to call me with the results! I'll let you know when I hear from her. |
Finally heard from vet. They think he either has a portosystemic shunt or micro vascular dysphasia. More expensive tests to be done. I have also made an appt somewhere else for second opinion. Either one of those means a shortened life span. I'm pretty upset right now! |

The vet that gave me a 2nd opinion agrees completely with my vet. He had a Protein C test today that is being sent to Cornell in NY. We should have the results back by the end of this week. If that shows nothing(which would be great), then we'll do a GI panel. He is eating and drinking much better now. |

MVD is fairly common and I know many yorkies with it who are older. Take a deep breath and try to think positive. The things we worry most about usually don't happen anyway! Just take it one step at a time...hopefully it will be a simple thing. |
Update I have posted 2 responses that don't show on here. I don't know what happened. Anyway, I finally have a diagnosis. He does have a liver disease, it's called micro vascular dysplasia. I caught it in the very early stages so the vet is hoping it can be controlled by a special diet. It's possible, even probable that in 5 yrs or so, it will get worse but we can't know for sure. In other words, I don't know if this is going to affect his lifespan or not. I can't think that it will or I couldn't handle it. |
P.S. This is inoperable. |

Your puppy will be fine! :) There are a lot of people on here with MVD pups...I have one who was diagnosed with a shunt as an adult and who had surgery to correct it. They also often have some issues with IBD. My pup, Teddy Bear, is on Hill's Z/D and doing very well. |
Here is a great link that you may find helpful. It is a publication written by Dr. Tobias at the University of TN. She is a leading researcher of liver disease in dogs. http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs...2013-04-10.pdf |
Ladyjane, thank you for the link. It was very informative and encouraging. I'm just gonna take one day at a time and enjoy every minute with him. Hopefully for 15 or more years! |
