Yorkie with CT - Collapsed Trachea Hello, I am new to this site and would appreciate any input. My 9 year old Yorkie takes Theophylline twice a day and Prednisone once a day and occasionally cough suppressant with codeine but I'm finding that her CT is not as well controlled as it used to be. Prednisone twice a day managed it well but vet and I decided to try it just once a day due to long term effects of the drug. I was wondering what medications others have had success with and would recommend. She is not overweight, I have reduced/eliminated allergens in my home in case they are triggers (no carpet, no candles, no sprays), I run a humidifier on a regular basis, keep her in AC in the summer and have a quiet household. There are SO many different medications you can try. I personally didn't find theophylline to be much help...I tried it with a couple of pups with CT. I have had a few over the years....all different cases. It seems to me that each case is individual and what works for one may not work for another. Sounds like you have covered all of the other things that are simple to control. For really out of control coughing, I really like Bupranex. I have used that along with Hycodan....alternating them. For really horrible nights in one of mine I used to have syringes on hand with Ace Pro and Bupranex. It zonked him out, but saved him from an EC visit..usually snapped him out of the coughing. I also used Lomotil successfully. If you vet has not heard of using it, it is in Kirk's Veterinary manual. I believe I have a copy of it here if you would like it. |
I uploaded two pages of the book I mentioned. There are suggestions for managing CT......under antitussive agents, Lomotil is suggested and the mode of action explained. It worked for one of my pups and also a friend's pup who had CT. My last pup with CT was on Temeril P for most of his life and it managed him very well. Like I said, they are each different. Ladyjane, thank you so much for your input and for sending the links on Lomotil. I am relieved that there are other medications I can try for my girl. Calling the vet today. |

I wanted to add that I find that steam from a Vicks vaporizer works better than a humidifier. It's about $15 at Walmart or Amazon for a warm most vaporizer. I do not use the vapor packets or anything in it. But for us, hycodan literally saved his life - and it had to be the high dose - and he's doing great. |
I forgot to add that Barney has a severe collapsing trachea. We have been very lucky. He also has to eat and drink with his bowls elevated because the positioning of his head too low led to severe coughing and choking and it was very scary. |
Oops forgot to add one more thing... My vet prefers Methylprednisolone to prednisone for reduced side effects. It is about double the dose of the steroid (prednisilone) in Temiril P but without the antihistamine. We tried all three and the best fit has been the high dose of Hycodan. |

Just following these threads. My Willow was just Dx'd with this yesterday. For now she is on the Hycodan Cough Syrup. It seems to have helped some, but will be talking with her Vet on Monday again. Linda has seen the Video of my Willow and one of coughing fit's. It just breaks my heart to hear her cough. She is 11 yrs ( I adopted her 6 yrs ago). I feel so bad for her as in January she had to endure Bladder Stone surgery and now this. |

Collapse Trachea Hi I am new to site my little Oscar is 8 yrs old and has mild CT was diagnosed a few years back . We give him 1/2 tablet 2x a day of Butorphanol and it has worked pretty good. Scary when he gets a cough fit and try to calm him down. Going outside to go the bathroom is getting tough with cooler weather coming trying to change over to Pee Pads but he prefers going outside.... any suggestions would be helpful thanks |
