What the heck is wrong!
 

Izzy is now 5.5 yrs old. 9 lbs. I took her to petco for grooming and wash. She hasn't been the same since! She is skidish runs and hides. She runs her butt on the floor. Licking her butt and vulva. Shaking. She didn't eat for two days or drink for one day. She has finally peed and pooped. This all happened three days ago. All I have done to help is give her benedryl. I looked carefully for Knicks or abrasions but have found nothing. I figure I will bring her to the vet tomorrow but wanted to throw it out there for ideas.

It could be anything, so a vet check is definitely in order. I am sure the percentage of issues at Petco grooming is small, but you should read up at this link just to be informed:

I'd be concerned that they did knick her indeed - but that you just can't see it. Poor baby. I'd probably take her to the vet too.

Poor girl! "Running her butt on the floor" -- scooting is usually a sign of anal gland problems or it could be itchiness from being trimmed back there.

Anal gland problems can be triggered by improper or first time manual expressing of glands. Some of the behavior you describe often goes along with anal gland issues -- acting skiddish and hiding.

If she continues this way, I agree a vet visit would be a good idea.

Thank you. That was my best guess too. Never again taking her to a 'place'. From now in it will be a recommended person.

I have heard so many negative reviews about the grooming dept. at Petco....I have no idea if they are true, but I figure ."where there is soooooo much smoke, there is bound to be a fire". By the same token, I was taking mine to a very expensive, well referred, very busy groomer,and ONE day, they got all buggered up on their appointments, they were running about 8 hours behind, and they went NUTS....I guess they put all the dogs in a huge wash area and took a hose and just sprayed them all down, lathered them all up, then sprayed them all down....I am just guessing at what happened, all I know is my poor little Bumper came home absolutely terrified....he NEVER got over the trauma of what happened that day......he would shake in sheer terror if he even heard water running in a faucet.....that is when I decided my babies would never be subjected to that terror again, just to be groomed, so I do my own "grooming". They may not look like professionally groomed Yorkies, but we do not go anywhere off the property, and they are so active in the back yard, and Houston summers are always over 100*, they all sport short coats! There are groomers on YT that are always so helpful, there are YouTube videos on how to groom.....if you can not find a really good, compassionate, with great referrals, groomer, I would opt to do my own.

Change groomers!!! i went through a similar thing with Micah a few months ago and he never acted that way before or since..

I've always opted to groom my own dogs. With Scottie and my previous dog. It can be a fun bonding experience. And it really saves on costs :)

I used to groom professionally. Stay AWAY from pet store groomers. They are terrible. Find a small local shop that is reputable.

There have been law suits due to Petsmart grooming.
I'm sure it is not all of them, but one left a dog in a cage with a blow dryer on it and apparently forgot about it - the pup died.

May have been one incident, however, that would scare me to death. A local Yorkie breeder that is teaching me to show confirmation has a very well liked boarding kennel -- she has taught me to do the small amount of grooming I do on my Cali - except I am too chicken to do her nails :eek:

Did they shave her butt ? If yes then it's probably just too short. Lots of dogs can't have the but under the tail "shaved" it needs to be scissor cut. When the butt is shaved the hair actually pokes them in that area each time they move or wag their tail & also when they go poo, so be sure to tell your groomer NOT to shave her butt. Some dogs get so upset over this that they will not eat, they will vomit, shake, but plant or run from their but, licking & chewing at the area is often a sign that the hair is poking them IF it's not an anal gland issue. I have one who is having this issue rite now as I had the groomer shave as short as she could , even though we both know better with this dog but one of my other dogs has ringworm so I need to be able to check his skin well daily to be sure he's not getting any sores on him & he either refuses to move or he runs from his butt like a sidewinder & does the butt plant about every 2 to 5 ft whenever he does move. Soooo that's most likely whats going on with your pup & nothing the groomer did to her or any other kind of trauma.

That's not something I have EVER heard of in my life. Sanitary trims are normal, and a part of upkeep for long coated dogs so feces does not build up in the coat around the anus.

I used to groom and I have never heard of that.

Monty started doing a scoot and would just sit after his neuter. I realized it's cause the hair started growing back n and the incision was a bit puckered and he was being poked. It was funny and horrifying because there really wasn't much I could do except give him a wee rub.

Couple days later though the scooting happened more. Had his anal glands expressed. The doc said they were partially filled but it sure seemed like ht got a lot out of there and no more scooting.

Let us know what the dr says. Poor baby. How horrible for her and for you. Nod nod.

I took Monty to Petsmart for a trim before his neuter. I like the scruffy look. "Just trim around his rear end and along his belly. Not shave, just trim. I picked him up and they had chopped his main along his jaw line and didn't even do it in a straight line. LE SIGH!!

Not life threatening and will grow back but grrrr.....

Have a new groomer. yep. Too scary to do it my own self.

I am not a pro groomer by ANY stretch of the imaginaton....but, right or wrong, I shave around my baby's rectum, and have never had an issue....maybe because I start them early? I dont run the clippers OVER their rectum....I put the trimmer at the rectum, then shave out from the rectum....do this all the way around their little rectum.....I dont have any issues of "running scared" or scooting activity following this shave around their rectum. I use a Peanut to do peri-anal trims.....

You should never go over the rectum, just around it. It's very easy to cut that sensitive skin with the clippers!

I have seen dogs who were unused to being shaved around that area who act funny after simply because it feels weird to have there be no fur. But they get over it quickly.
