I am glad your breeder offered to make good on this...I hope she paid for the surgery or at least refunded the purchase price. I would personally not be satisfied with a breeder who wanted the pup back in return for the money....but of course that is usually spelled out in the contract. I was merely commenting about the posts that you and others made saying that LCP is not genetic. That is simply not a fact. I said that reputable breeders do look for LCP and do remove pups from their breeding stock if LCP does show up. |

In total had three specialist tell me not genetic - they have the degrees and knowledge - not me - read a lot on where it is mentioned but there isn't any real proof that I came across. It is just a fluke. I would not sell my boy back to the breeder because of this and did not feel it was the breeder's fault in anyway. I deeply appreciate the offer concern and guidance provided by the breeder, the prep and post op info that the breeder shared- truly and great Yorkie person. Have owned Yorkies for over 30 years and had showed for several years - Have friends that are show breeders and I had never heard of LCP/LP before this. I started this topic to provide a blog for those that might not know about LP and also a general status as he heals to help others if needed. Also have Trupanion insurance on both my pups and they authorized the claim within 48 hours before surgery and have been great to work with. |

I encourage you to read the link I provided from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Orthopedic Foundation for Animals: Legg-Calve-Perthes |
LCP is probably genetic. The breeder may be nice and honest, but if her dog threw LCP she's got dogs that are not what is call well bred dogs. I'm sorry to say it like that, but hey, I'm in the same boat. My dog has 5 genetic conditions. |

Here is one link to a published report on genetic disorders with YT's.Genetic Disorders Yorkshire Terrier There are more than a few other links from different universities and expert sources that can be found here if a search is done. What I find fascinating is that LCP appears to be a toy breed predominant problem that is rare to find in medium to large breeds and the med to large seem to get Hip dysplasia... I am so happy that you are doing the physio and your boy is healing well! |
Luke has had 8 session of PT - first 5 were cold treatment and Laser. The next five are small things to step over to keep his balance and water therapy. He was on the water treadmill for 7 minutes on Friday using all 4 paws and they said he did great.. It took him three times and he got the hang of it. Hope to be able to watch him and get a video soon. |
Update on Luke He completed his 3 weeks of therapy today. He got up to 21 minutes in hydrotherapy. They have told us he is doing very well and appears to be ahead of the healing process with his movements. We can now walk him on leash for up to 10 minutes and increase as we go along. We take him back in 4 weeks for a final exam by the surgeon. I asked if they do an more X-rays and the answer was no. I put a video of him on my FB site, but can't figure how to post it here. We are so proud of him and glad he is 3 weeks post surgery now. He won everyone's heart there (which doesn't surprise us at all). Took about 3 1/2 hrs daily to drive him there, therapy and drive home. - Very well worth it seeing the results. Can't say enough good things about the facility where he had surgery and therapy. Also had gotten his claim pre-approved by Trupanion - faxed in final invoices yesterday, got email this morning they had paid the claim. |
Wow - love a happy ending! I know from experience that it very tough to watch your baby go through it but watching her run around pain free is worth it. |
Good news all the way around. Happy to hear it! |

Summer is coming and if you live near water it would be great to keep up the water therapy. Actually a kiddie pool in the backyard can work fine too. Took my boy to Cherry Beach yesterday and it was all I could do to keep him out of the very very cold water:) In terms of posting videos here what I have done is either copy n paste the link to either my facebook or youtube clip. |
Wonderful news that his recovery is going so well. Both your pups are gorgeous. Best wishes for many healthy years ahead! |
