Sick with possible fever So Xena is a picky eater. She only eats when she's hungry and every now and then I have days where she picks at her food or doesn't eat her breakfast because too much is going on. This week she has been exceptionally picky at first I did not think too much about it but the last few days its been a struggle getting her to eat. She's turned her nose away from treats, if I do get her to eat something like sliced apples its one or two little pieces and she done. I've had to put bits of hot dog or cheese in her food just to get her to eat and that has only really worked for supper now. Aside from her lack of appetite Ive noticed that she's tired. She lays around on the couch all day, usually she has her spurts of energy where she runs around or barks at me to get a toy but she hasn't had that the last two days at least. She still gets up and follows me around or to see if someone's here. However, this morning she threw up and its possible she was running a fever yesterday (its hard to tell because my sister had her dogs over so she could have been worked up barking at one of them). I have switched out her water bowl to a smaller one so I can measure how much she's drinking. I read online giving her aspirin is a bad idea. Is there anything I can do or give her to help her feel better? Also my sister's two dogs previously had a cold. Is it possible this is just a cold that will take its course or should I be concerned its more serious? |
I would say a Vet visit just to have her checked out. |
Sick dog Hope she is feeling better today and that she has seen or will see a vet. Not eating like this plus malaise does not sound good. Please let us know his she is doing and what the vet says. |

Thank you guys for your concern and advice. She is doing a little better today. She ate about half of what she normally eats this morning and has held it down. Yesterday she only threw up once and it was mostly yellow bile, so probably from having an empty stomach. Since she has not shown any more dangerous signs that would require immediate vet care I am keeping a close watch on her and if she does not get any better over the weekend I will try making a vet appointment on Monday. |
I hope she continues to do better, otherwise do not hesitate to go to the ER. As Judy wrote, these little ones can down fast. Hold the hot dogs and the cheese. Both of these are very high in fat and can trigger pancreatitis, which can cause vomiting and lethargy like you are seeing. Sometimes pancreatitis develops slowly, sometimes hits fast and hard. How old is your Xena? |

And, let me add, pancreatitis kills. If she is still having issues and/or vomiting, you should get her to a vet ! |
How old is she and how long has she had inappetance like this...? |
Thank you all for your comments and advice. Xena is three years old. Monday she started eating again and had her energy back. She is doing really good. Has not shown any more signs of illness and is back to her old self. Unfortunately now, Trixie, my three year old pomapoo is sick. I came home yesterday to diareha and throw up. She also is showing the same signs just laying around and lack of enthusiasm towards things she would normally bark at or go crazy for. I think she has caught what Xena had so I don't think its pancreatitis. There must be some kind of dog bug going around. They are both due to go to the vet to get their yearly shots this week so I am going to make sure to mention this to the vet then. |
Another reason I do not let my dogs socialize with other dogs or run in dog parks...."some kind of dog bug going around"....... Be sure you mention it to the vet BEFORE dog gets shots..... |

I agree with Yorkiemom about the vaccinations -- do not give them unless the girls are completely back to themselves. Don't do the vaccinations when they are sick. |
