How much formula to feed puppy I have a week old yorkie puppy who I have been tubefeeding since birth. She started out at .19 lbs. and now is .46 lbs. I started feeding her 2cc every two hours per vets recommendation. I have gradually increased it to 3cc every two hours. A couple of days ago I was able to get her to nurse on the mother. The mother had very little milk left after a week, and now it seems that she is drying up. The puppy tries and tries, but doesn't seem to get any milk. I've still been feeding her with tube as she will not suck from bottle. My question is, should I be feeding her more? She still wants to nurse on mother after I tube feed her and she appears to be hungry. I don't want to feed her too much and distend her stomach or make her throw up. Another question, How can I get mother to produce milk again, if that is even possible. Any suggestions? Thanks for reading my post. |
I would measure weight in ounces or grams not lbs as that is too big of a measurement. Here's a great chart for tube feedinghttp://schultzvetclinic.com/canine-reproduction/puppy-tube-feeding-chart/ Personally, I try to get them to nurse on mom if you can and since your little one will nurse, I would tube a lesser amount and then put them with mom while also weighing three times a day to ensure they are gaining. The more he or she nurses on mom, the more her milk should come in. You might get some fenugreek too which helps moms milk come in but mostly the puppy should stimulate her. The more he seems to be nursing, the more I would cut back on tube feeding. Is mom taking care of them otherwise? |
I think I expounded at length on this post, in another post? This baby's health requires two things.... 1) Proper nutrition/adequate caloric intake from balanced formula 2) Adequate amount for weight of puppy. I covered both these areas in my other post....I remember this post because I was so excited about you tube feeding....follow my detailed instructions from the other post and you should be successful, barring any other health issues. |
Thanks for your responses. I've been so tired from feeding puppy every two hours around the clock. As for the mother, she has supervised visitation only. She is way too rough with the puppy. She tries to bury her and carry her around in her mouth, with her mouth around puppy's stomach. She still doesn't seem to be producing milk. She doesn't eat much and I almost have to force her to drink. She's too worried about the puppy. I'll read your suggestions when I have time. Right now I need to feed the puppy again. |
You must feed 14-16 cal. per cc, and give 1cc of formula per oz of body weight. That formula gives enough calories, in a dosage that does not distend or over feed the baby..... "more bang for your buck" so to speak. You are wise NOT to put that baby back in with momma....momma will kill the baby if given a chance....she is NOT a devoted momma and if you do decide to put that baby in with her, do not turn your head for even a second....it just takes a second for her to bite that baby in half. |

Depends what formula you are feeding the baby....yes, it can constipate the baby.....the formula I gave you does not create that problem. |
