Baby having abdominal surgery today, mommy freaking out Hi everyone, I just dropped my baby off at the vet for his neuter surgery and am sobbing so loud I bet the whole street can hear. He has been monitored since I first got him for an undescended testicle. I read so many posts here that I thought this was common but today my vet said it isn't common. So she has to go in abdominally so he will have that incision and the normal one and also he has retained virtually all his baby teeth so the bill has just tripled. His health and safety in the long run is worth it and priceless but I'm just so scared. She said longer anesthetic time, bigger risk, etc. My baby is so attached to me and he's my whole world. I haven't been a day without him since he came home. I don't even know what I'm asking for here, I guess just to get it all out and maybe hear of similar experiences. Tips, tricks, or any advice on post operative care for a little rambunctious guy who loves jumping so much he must be part kangaroo...I know getting it all done at once is best and there's no option but to do this but I cried leaving him and my heart is breaking hoping he's okay. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Nadia |
Hi Nadia, I hope surgery went smoothly today. Was your little boy discharged today or is he staying overnight? Keeping a Yorkie quiet after surgery can be a challenge. When Max was neutered, he tried to jump, but stopped himself when he felt some pain. I held him a lot and even carried him on his 1 mile walking route every morning for about 10 days. That made him happy. He ran a little indoors, but I tried to discourage by getting down on the floor to play with him in one spot, tug-o-war instead of fetch. I also understand crying when you dropped him off for surgery. :) I sobbed when I had to leave Max. |

Thanks for the reply! He was discharged in the day and it turned out that once he was out the vet was able to see the testicle and didn't have to go in abdominally after all which was a huge relief. He had 9 teeth pulled as well though. He is very very sleepy so no problems yet with limiting his activity but as he is part kangaroo I'm sure that will soon change. He apparently stayed awake the whole day at the vet not wanting to miss anything and somehow managed to get the vet to hold him in her office all day long or sleep under her desk. What a suck he is. She joked he couldn't go home because she was keeping him! It went much better than expected and now it's just a matter of recovery and lots of love and kisses! He is acting completely normal eating and going potty. |
Yay!! So happy to hear it went so well! Very scary moment but now it's done. Smile. Will have a thought for his speedy recovery. My boy is due to go in in about a month! Eeps. |
Glad to hear it went better than expected. Scrappy was about 10 years old when he was picked up as a stray and became our foster. He had one undescended testicle and they still went ahead with his neuter event though he was so old. His recovery time was very long compared to a regular neuter, about two weeks. Every so often he would either try to get up or lay down and he would scream out in pain. Sometimes more than a few yelps, but several. It was heartbreaking and I couldn't do anything to make it better. With time he healed. He would try to lay down but since he was sore he would lay his head down but have his butt up in the air. I felt bad for laughing at him. |
Happy that everything turned out ok for your little guy! It can be really scary when we have to leave them with someone else that first time! |
