Avulsion Fracture from Falling Off Bed Hi!! Im new to this Forum. I have been reading your story and have the same thing happen this morning. My 4 month old 2 lb baby fell off the bed it took two seconds and she had slid off :cry::cry::cry: and immediately favored her back leg. I took her to the vet and had xrays done. Ortho Surgeon looked at it and she has a avulsion fracture, they said it was still close to the bone and he thinks she will heal and wants to re xray next week but after reading this I am thinking surgery is my only option. Im so scared and fell like a horrible momma. Shes not in any pain just will not bear weight on her foot. |

If your puppy needs surgery, best to get it scheduled. If she is not bearing weight, it is painful. |
Thank you! Thats just the thing, the Ortho didn't seem to think she was going to need it that it will heal on its on with her being so young??? Everything I have read on it says shes going to need it. I guess Im just searching for reassurance of what he told me. |

Poor baby girl..so tiny and small!! At least the vet says she's going to be okay. I hope she's going to have a speedy recovery! best wishes  |
I know and I failed her. It just took two seconds for me to sit here there while I covered my Maltipoo up in the bed and from the time my hand left her she slid and fell. It breaks my heart!!! 😭😭😭😭 |

Was this a board certified surgeon who looked at her? |
I just did a look up for you. The closest boarded surgeons to you are in Chattanooga. If you have not seen a boarded surgeon, I would highly recommend visiting one for a second opinion. Thank you so much for taking the time to look that up for me. :) The Vet took Xrays and came back in the room and said there Orthopedic Surgeon reviewed her xray and and said she had a fracture where the bone had a small separation from the bone but he seemed to think her being so young and with create rest that she would start to heal. He didn't cast it or splint it. We go back next Tuesday for xrays if that piece has moved from the bone then he would do surgery and put a pin in to attach it back, if not then he thinks it should heal on its on. |

Hope all goes well ! |
I would get a second opinion. When Zoey needed surgery for Legge Parthes I saw three surgeons. |

Thank you all so much! Im so ready for Tuesday to get here to see if the bone has moved or if it looks like it will heal. She is on create rest and its horrible because she wants to play so much and she doesn't even act hurt but I know better! |
Any update on your little girl? |
She goes back tomorrow for a X-ray but she is putting weight on it and acting just fine so I am praying it's healing!! I'll update after her appointment tomorrow. Thank you for everyone la concern!! 😘😘 |
We just left the vet and the X-ray shows that the bone has moved up :( but that it wasn't causing her any pain and they did different things and range of motions and she didn't show and discomfort so she said that she would not recommend doing surgery on it that it looks like it should heal on its on. Gosh I hope they know what they are talking about. I just worry it might cause problems later...but she's acting fine she's out of create confinement and back in her play pen. |
Put your fears and concerns to rest and go for a second opinion. It will only cost about $150 for a boarded surgeon to view the xrays and examine her...and maybe a couple of hours out of a day. Well worth it for peace of mind imo. This is a puppy with a long life ahead of her. |
I'm not understanding why it hasn't been put in a cast....if they feel it will heal on its own and doesn't require surgery it should still need to be immobilized. To prevent the bone from moving. I would def get a second opinion. It will be a shame to have more damage done bc it wasn't treated properly the first time, and so much time has passed since the accident. coming from experience with broken bones in my yorkie, surgery is very expensive and casting alone wasn't an option for me. |
Im not sure but the ortho seems to think it will heal on its on. They do have a ortho surgeon that reads their xrays. They said that because its not giving her any pain and her showing zero sign now of injury that they wouldn't consider surgery unless it causes he pain. She is walking and playing now like nothing ever happened. The xray showed that it moved up but did not move out. They checked her for Luxating Patella also and said looked good and that leg didn't show any difference. |

Just me...but unless one of them is board certified I would not be relaxed. The ONLY reason I commented further today was because you voiced concerns; but now you seem to once again be stepping back. Your pup, your call. Good luck |

Again...best wishes. Hope she is fine :) |
Years ago, my son's cat and my little Chihuahua were racing down stairs and the cat deliberately swiped at my baby and sent her tumbling down a flight of stairs....she broke her little front leg...we rushed her to a vet....they said it would heal on its own....and it certainly did just that...all deformed and crooked. As she grew, the bone did NOT heal all nice and straight and like it was supposed to....they should have at the very least, splinted that fracture....now, every case goes on its own merits, but this is why I respect specialists and really feel better when I get second opinions from the best, most qualified specialists available....especially when I find myself clueless and dependent entirely on what these people are telling me is the best recourse for my specific issue..... |
Please get a 2nd opinion! |

An improperly healed bone will require a more difficult and expensive surgery than a surgery to get it fixed properly now. I would go straight to a specialist (and not the one that they used, just so that you can truly get a second opinion) and if they give you the same opinion, you can rest easy at night and stick your tongue out of us for being worry warts. :D If they say that she does need surgery, you are getting it fixed while it is less complicated and costly. |
Im sorry I somehow unsubscribed to the Thread and didn't know I had replies. Im still figuring all this out. The ortho surgeon is there in the office. I haven't directly spoken to him, However shes running and playing and it doesn't even seem like there's anything wrong now. I'm going to get her x-rays and have someone else to look at them for a 2nd opinion. |
poor baby, hope she is better soon |
